That table appears to be exceptionally stout.  Thumbs Up

You could park a jeep on it I’m sure.

I now have both of my L134 engines in the workshop, ready for teardown. The original engine is not seized but looks in sorry shape. The second one I got with the parts jeep may have been rebuilt about 7 years ago and never run. The guy I bought it from said that the owner previous to him claimed to have rebuilt it but he was not sure. I plan to use this engine and tear it down regardless. If its all good hopefully I can reassemble with new gaskets, etc and have a running engine soon.

Please follow along and give me tips as I go.

Pictures to follow.

Jon

I believe the black engine is the rebuilt CJ one and is gear driven. The red one is from my original Jeep and I believe has the chain drive as it is from an MB.

Is it true that the gear and chain driven cam shafts rotate in opposite direction?

Just wondering if I can swap parts between the two engines if required.

The ‘salad’ grows. 🙂

Yes, the cams rotate in the opposite directions.  Most parts can be swapped, but the cams require the oil pumps they came with and there are oiling details for the timing chain that are different from the oiling details for the timing gears.

What's strange is the heads from your two engines.  The (older?) non-ribbed one has the tappet clearances cast in but the (newer?) ribbed one doesn't.

I doubt if the heads are original to the blocks on either engine.
More salad properties.
Thanks for the cam shaft rotation confirmation.

Yeah, there is always that factor to consider, isn't there?

More engine teardown pick.
There is a good discussion with lots of pictures over at the International Flat Fender Club Facebook page about my engine.

I’ll get the oil pans off tomorrow.

The garage rebuild is almost complete.
All that is left to do is exterior siding, gutters and paint.
I spent the last couple days this week getting the jeep back in to its new home.

Time to focus on the engine rebuild again.

Engine is completely stripped and will be going to the machine shop Tuesday to be checked over. I still plan to rebuild it myself however.

Oil pump and water pump are shot but other than that it looks pretty good.

I got my ‘46 L134 block back from the machine shop.
Unfortunately it has 2 cracks in it just below the distributor mount. You can barely see them between the black marker lines. Apparently cracks here a quite common. We are going to fix it with the lock and stitch technique. My buddy fixed a crack in his boat motor that way so he has the kit and the jig. I just need to buy the pins then we will be drilling and tapping the block soon. Standby for pictures.

I rebuilt my Carter but I was nowhere near as organized.  All my parts went into one box.  Maybe that's why it took such a long time to reassemble it.  Wacko
