got a little more done today. Didn't really have the mental power for anything complicated - so I just sanded, and ground....and sanded. I bet I swept up 5 lbs of filler when I was done.
After wheat seemed like hours, all the filler is removed. The filler was 1/4 thick in one spot. I'm still not quite understanding the use of so much filler. It's really not needed. The panel is pretty decent. With some work and a skim coat of filler, it will look good. I've got 20 little holes to weld up. I'll do that tomorrow if i can. Today was a pleasant surprise! I expected to find some ugly stuff under all that Bondo. I'm pleased. |

That seems to be a very common spot for damage, mine was rolled up like worse than yours. I started to fix it but ended up cutting a piece out of another tub and welding it in. The area around the gas cap is pushed in at least a half an inch (hard to see in pictures) and every square inch has a dent in it. Most of the rust is flat panels and not to bad to fix. Good luck.

Fortunately the filler hole area on this tub is near mint. But like you i think i will be cutting away and replacing at least a portion of that rear corner. I have a pretty good idea on how to proceed. We'll see if it works. Hopefully this weekend we'll get it done.
Thanks for the pics and the comments!

So got cracking on the driver rear quarter today. My goal was to try and save as much original metal as possible. I had to remove the rear top bow bracket as this is where the damage was concentrated. Looks like it was either flopped on its side at some point, or backed into. Anyway, I hammered for quite a while but the panel just wasn't moving the way I wanted. After some head scratching, I determined the sh*t repair at the lower corner was holding the panel in an odd place. So I cut that corner away and things started to move. I got the panel pretty straight I have to say. Not perfect by any means. But for this amateur, I'm pretty proud of it!
I refurbed the cover too. Even that had bondo on it. Sheesh!
My internal debate now is whether to replace the rear bow holder bracket. I won't likely ever need it. So I'm considering removing the front one too to clean up the side a bit. What say you? Edited by nofender - 04 Mar. 2017 at 8:59pm |

Looks good, definitely a miserable spot to repair. I have some real heavy pieces of steel that I clamp on each side to flatten and straighten things out, makes a great dolly to repair seems and corners. When I can I leave it on while welding. I also have some heavy angle iron and bolt two pieces together right through the panel to help straighten and flatten things

Dang! your repair looks great!
I got and idea to create a small jack to push that panel out just a smidge more. May attempt that tomorrow.

Mine was on it's side so I was able to put one of those little cheapo floor jacks on the inner wheel well and do the same thing.

Pushed today and got the passenger floor in. I went a little "custom" on the trans tunnel. I don't have the equipment to recreate the original shape of the tunnel. So, i squared it off some and actually gave the t-case a little more room under there. The "custom" area will be all under the tool box once all is said and done. Now we just need to cut out the top of the tunnel and create a patch panel. I would have done it today.....but i'm just out of steam....

I love the look of new sheet metal, looks good. I have a couple of M38 tubs that are rough but fine for cutting bits and pieces out of. If you have a particularly trick piece to make, let me know, I may be able to chop it out.
