That was my Plan A. I bought a 120 gal portable blaster and used screened, free river sand and it did a great job. Took me about 6 hours to do my frame and axles. However, it was too much for my 60 gal, 3.2 hp, 10.2SCFM, 90 psi air compressor, so I let the guy sandblast the body. Besides, those 2000+ lbs of sand and paint flakes piling up in my back yard didn't exactly match the rest of the landscaping. |

There is a local pit that used to sell screened casting sand by the train car load, I could get an 8 yd truck load for next to nothing, we would just dump it in a pile and cover it with a tarp. It was quite fine and not as sharp as commercial stuff, the train track has been pulled up and there are houses there now. I have a 5hp compressor and another 5hp head and motor mounted on a base piped into the same tank, they are set to start a different pressures so I don't pop any breakers. If I'm going to do any amount I still rent a small portable compressor from a local rental place. Saves on wear and tear and electricity.

So i decided to have the body media blasted. The guy came down a bit on his price and I sold off a few bits to easy the pain. I spent the better part of yesterday getting all the parts ready to go.
The grill became my dilemma. The grill that came with the jeep, I love the look of. I was going to blast only the rear portion and clear over the "patina" There was something about the white paint, faded, with some rust coloration that i thought would look very cool. But upon closer examination of the dent, I realize it's tweaked pretty good. So I had this wall art grill. It has at least 6 layers of paint which are all peeling at once - again giving it a cool look for display. It looks horrible! But upon closer examination it's nearly arrow straight. I had to do some hammer work on the shroud area. But that really was the only damage. Purists look away. I had to notch the lower section of the grill to clear the PS hoses. I also corrected the return line and add a PS cooler while I was there. |

Man, that metal looks good! Be sure to blow the thin film of any residual media "dust" off the metal before you prime it.
Can't wait to see how it turns out |

Thanks! It's already primed. The shop did it for me. It's ready for finish body work......or i could paint as is. I think i will leave some "imperfections" intact. These things were never laser straight and smooth. So i'm not going to overdue it. The cowl has a bit of a wave in it that I will correct. The driver's quarter is where I'll spend some time. My wife is away Memorial Day weekend. So i'll be pulling some all nighters out there. By Memorial Day, my goal is to be 100% ready for paint - at least the tub anyway.

Yikes. They cleaned it well before it was primed. But i'll be spending a considerable amount of time with the air nozzle and vacuum.

I'm already finding that out. I mounted the body today to do some final mock up and I'm seeing little sand piles here and there. Ugh. This may take some doing....
