Wooden backing on a target is not allowed? What does that mean? A tree or plywood? I know trees are a no no, but wooden target framework is OK???????

John, I guess they don't want plywood splinters scattered around the forest. What I've seen and intend to build, is a folding sandwich-board type affair that frames the target, with a piece of cardboard stapled to the frame and the target stapled to the cardboard. What gets me is they don't want wooden splinters in the woods, but bright orange clay pigeons are OK?
Don't worry, guys, I'm not about to let this lessen the amount of jeepin' we are going to do! There's always a short day, and even on a full day of jeepin', there's some time left before dark. BW

Hello,
I am planning on making some of the trail rides this summer, starting with Moab, May 19-21, 2017. I'm a newcomer to the Flatfenderers (is that a word?) and am looking forward to meeting some of you folks. I may stay a few days after Moab because then I am planning to head over to Ouray to check out the trails in that area (anyone want to join me?). Then heading north to the Black Hills run, then back for the Northern Colorado run and finishing up with the Fall Colors Tour. Phew! In between I'll try to find a local storage facility so I don't have to tow back and forth. That's the plan, anyway. Hopefully it will all fall together. Again, looking forward to some great scenery and meeting some great folks. John, 1943 MB/GPW |

You're going to need a pitstop to service your Jeep. That's alot to jump into all at once. I also would not get too far into the mountains alone. Safety in Jeep numbers you know. We all know these little antiques will surprise you with failed parts and problems, so try and hang with others. We haven't left anyone yet, but we sure have towed rigs back. Quite fast I might add. Thanks for the advice. I have had my share of unexpected mishaps, most minor, some catastrophic. I don't wander off the beaten path without backup. That's why I'm so looking forward to linking up with you all.

I agree with Terry, you may have to wait until June or July to scout the Ouray area. Watch the snow online at the Wolf Creek Ski Area to get an idea what you'll find in the mountains around Ouray. They got a lot of snow this winter, so it'll be a while before the roads open up. As far as a local storage facility goes, I've got a big back lot with easy access if you want to park your jeep at the Thirsty Dirt Ranch. I don't know where "local" is for you, but that's an option that I'll offer you. The snow is off the fields here in the valley but the mountains around here still have plenty. In fact I still have the tracks on my ATV and will be going "tracking" in the high country snow with a friend over the weekend. Now once I get the right switch for the two-post lift, and get it working, then I can focus on getting the big car hauler ready for Bruce's high country adventure. Got to have a good camp outfit to keep Nancy happy. Happy Wife = Happy Life!! |

Yes indeed, HWHL!
I may take you up on parking. My trailer is an enclosed cargo trailer and fairly small. I'll be joining you at Thirsty Dirt for one of the runs....Northern Colorado? Local for me is Wentzville, near St. Louis. Funny you should mention the ATV with tracks. I have an older 8-wheel Argo, no tracks, that I love to take out in the snow. Last couple years we didn't get much. Maybe we should make an Argoers club! As for Ouray, I will be in the area off and on all summer so can hit those trails later. My first trip out will be for the May 19-21 Moab Willys Run. If you're going to that maybe I could link up with you for the last part of the trip. Or, if not just stop by to meet and say Howdy. Enjoy the High Country and be safe. Stay in touch, John |

Now that the BHR is behind us, it's time to relight the torch for the NCR. Camping in the wilds of the northern Colorado rockies with lots of good jeeping friends is the thing to do in mid-July.

Yep, time to start getting ready, it'll be here before ya know it! (Where's that darn monkey, anyway? Every time I start the lawn mower he disappears.)
I'm still not sure what trails we will run, but we have plenty to choose from. I'd still like to run the Green Ridge Trail, but I'm getting too many negative waves. Maybe if we have a bunch of adventurous souls, we will just say, "to Aitch Ee double-toothpicks with it, lets go!" We can talk about it in camp. Don't worry, if we don't do it, we won't end up sitting in camp for a day. I need to talk about the Rock Soup a little bit. For those who have not heard the original story, there was a poor man who had no food, and lived in a poor village. No one had much food. He built a fire under a big pot of water, and his neighbor asked him what he was cooking. He said, "Rock Soup". The neighbor looked into the pot, and sure enough, there under the heating water was nothing but a rock. He asked how rock soup tasted, and the poor man said that it wasn't bad, but kinda thin. The neighbor said that he had a little bit of left-over chicken that might make it better. Another neighbor came by and offered up a couple of potatos. Another had a bit of sausage. In the end, everybody in the village had thrown in a little bit of something, and the whole village had a feast. Do you get the point? Every one is supposed to bring something for the soup. That hasn't happened much in the past. If I have to bring everything for the soup, it tends to be a bit expensive, it's another thing I have to do in prep for the run, and is not really Rock Soup, but a copy of what a good friend used to cook for us at black powder shoots, under the name of "Cream Can Dinner" because he cooked it in a cream can. Anywho, as jpet says, this year I will bring the pot, some water, and a rock. That's all. If you guys want anything else in your rock soup (or stew, or whatever) you will have to bring it. Now - I would like each of you to let me know what you intend to bring, so I can make sure we don't end up with a big pot of rock-and-potato soup. In order to keep some fun in it, don't tell me here in the thread, send me a PM, so the rest don't know what's coming. If you tell me potatos, I might say, "We already have potatos, think of something else." OK? Alright, get out there and get your jeep ready, and then go over your towing rig and trailer. Make sure they are ready to go too. I don't want to hear about any blown tires, burned up wheel bearings, or wrecked rigs. Get it all done so you can get some rest before leaving home, 'nuff said? BOOGITY!!BOOGITY!!BOOGITY!! LET'S GO JEEPIN' FOLKS!!! BW We Have Miles to Jeep Before We Sleep

Hey Bruce, We will be bringing a 22lb turkey to cook up in my smoker/oven (takes 2 hrs to cook) for all to partake in one night. If we plan on this the night before your stew I'm thinking we might have some tasty bits left over for the pot. We typically go on a group camp out once a year with up to 30 people and my turkey is always a request. All we need is some side dishes to go along with it..
Ya'll let me know what you think and We'll make it happen. We plan to roll in on Tuesday sometime . Cheers! |

well dang it Bruce. Looks like I'm out for Northern Colorado this year, what with Grampa's Jeep bering laid up at the moment. I'm pretty bummed about it, but hopefully I can use the time to get him back in fighting shape so I don't miss the entire Jeep season.
Just a little advice for all travelers. DO NOT SLEEP AND DRIVE at the same time. It can ruin your whole summer and more.

Stan, what IS the prognosis for Grandpa's jeep? Have you had a chance yet to determine if the engine and drivetrain and frame are still in good shape? Is your work pretty much all revolving around the body issues? I wish you well! Keep us apprised.

Stan, come on out and ride with us! There's always an empty seat, and sometimes a guy likes to ride instead of drive, so you could take over. Heck, we might even be able to scare up an extra jeep! BW
