My '46 2A #69750 (circa late Oct/early Nov '46) came with a back seat when I bought it, and I have been focused on other things...  Last week it was brought to my attention that "according to General Service Letter No. 808, dated 17 January, 1947" the smaller back rest rear seat was changed to the deeper backed version "at serial number 77568 and was implemented on the assembly line on 12 December, 1946."

I believe mine to be the latter version of the 2A, as opposed to a 3A that would have three square holes in the back.  I do not know it's history, original or repop.  I'd like to swap it for an earlier 2A rear seat, original or repop, and would consider paying the difference for original if applicable (though a straight swap would be preferable, I'm just looking for the period correct look, even for just six weeks, lol).

Would like to avoid shipping if possible, so likely mostly a northeast thing... my plans at this point involve the Willys Picnic, Kempton, PA and the NH ride if that factors in.

I was hoping to find someone in a similar "predicament", Mark, and trade seats of similar conditions if possible (and so far I have, but distance is a biatch, lol).  Let me chew on it and I'll drop you a PM-

Mike

You know that your seat may be the original one. The factory did not always change things on the assembly line at one serial number specifically. They used up the old parts as they got to them.

In this case it would seem, according to that Service Letter, that your 2A was too early by a month or so for that seat. Yet, I suspect that your 2A was one of the test versions for that seat, so the folks at Willys could see if they liked the new style seat. Since it worked well in your 2A, they went ahead with the change. If I am correct, you have a rare prototype rear seat. If I am wrong, it still is a heck of a story!

We know that the Service Letters are not always accurate. This has been the cause of much consternation to many folks here. I would not take what any Service Letter from Willys as pure gospel. They have been wrong way too often for me to change out parts just on their say so.

Of course all of the above is just IMHO!

Trying to sort this out Smile... I have a feeler out to a jeep built only a day or two earlier than mine sporting the same/similar long backed seat...

I have a feeling that peeps may have been inclined to replace their shorter, more uncomfortable miltary styled seats with the new and improved version somewhere along the line, but your "story" is compelling LOL

Your harming your health over this. Stop worrying about it and get the seat that you have always wanted and know is right for you. Your first idea and thoughts are always the right decision.
