How did Carter date their carbs? Did they stamp a letter/number on the tag? How do you read it?

I think I found my answer.

A-Jan
B-Feb
C-Mar

5=1945
6=1946
7=1947

So a carb manufactured in October 1947 would be stamped K7 on the brass tag. Can anybody confirm this?

The tag on my carb is A3 does that mean it is a Jan. 1943 carb? My CJ2A is #49022

I guess that theory is blown. Back to the drawing board.

Two vehicles is really not a large enough sample to decide if your theory is correct or not. Many carburetors and tags get swapped around.

My notes indicate your theory is correct, but I'm not sure of the source for this information. In dealing with alphabetical month date codes, the letter I is often omitted because it looks like the number 1. I'm not sure if Carter used the letter I or not.

As many left over parts as there were from WWII isn't it possible that you are correct?

I don't think they made 636S carbs until 1945-46 timeframe. The 636SA carbs could have a A3 date perhaps if it were made in January of 53, I suppose if that's how they dated them. Is yours an S or SA?

the "S" in 636S denotes it as an assembly as far as part numbers go.  The "A" in 636SA denotes it as the first significant revision of that assembly... just noting that SA is obviously later, and with bob w.'s info i'm banking on jan '53...

How many patent dates?

My '46 came to me with a '52 kaiser supersonic block,  and a 636SA with "B3" on the tag, with a small "7" under that.  12 patent dates.  February '53 feels periodish to the block, even though a 636SA wouldn't be correct for the block. (Salad).

ETA:  Sean has some interesting info here:

p/n 640304:  Carter WO, type 596s  -  up to s/n 69589
p/n 643337:  Carter WO, type 636S  - after s/n 69589 up to s/n 212110
p/n 647744:  Carter WO, type 636SA - after s/n 212110

My '46 is #69750, so looks like it should have a 636S, not an SA, but more importantly if the S was after #69589 there's no way A3 is '43... and my B3 makes more sense as '53 after #212110 (which is late '48)

Mike, I'll take a look at my tag and let you know what date code it shows and shoot you a photo since we are just a few units apart.

OK, I'll throw in a monkey wrench: My carb tag is stamped  "636SA - D7".    BW

Mine is 1946 cj2a #81509. Do we know what the cut outs mean on the tag. Not trying to hijack thread, just additional question on carb tags

The cut outs are factory inspection punches.
Traditional wisdom is that the month and year of production is stamped with letters corresponding to the month and the number represents the year.
The tag in the previous post is confusing to me since "M" does not correspond to any of the months in the A-L thought process. 6 is easy to figure out.
Who knows if we all have factory original carbs....maybe there is a code for a replacement carb.

If the letter "I" is omitted, as commonly done in date codes, the letter "M" is December.

So I looked a spare carb in my collection, the tag says F9.  So July of 1949.  This carb still has some of its bronze coating on the outside and some factory rubber stamped numbers.  The rubber stamp looks like a smug with a 22 after it.  What does that mean?

I also a have a NOS carb (98% of the bronze coating is still there) on the 1948 Lefty.  The tag says B9 with a rubber stamped 94 on the carborator.  So February of 1949.  What about the rubber stamped number? The line it was produced on? The inspectors number?

Just wondering if anyone knows.

Be Safe out there.

Mine seems to fall right in line with the alphanumeric coding on the brass tag for #69376.
