I'm sorry Rick, those are a lost cause.
Just send them to me and I'll put them in my scrap metal pile.

Interesting items. Were they mine, they'd be in pieces already, hoping to be re-assembled.

Rick - I have some Kelly's and also some Cutlass' which look similar. I never found any info on the Kelly but here is a breakdown page for the Cutlass:

Thx for the link Bruce. I have not pulled them apart yet, was hoping for a drawing before starting.
There's so little Kelly info out there i'll be sure to document the recondition effort.

They are nice. They look like the Cutlas hubs from the outside but are completely different on the inside.

Hi RickG,
The word "patent" should be stamped onto the face (i've seen it on pics of other Kelly hubs). Is there a patent number also stamped on it?
I'm working to organize hubs by rough dates and manufacture to better understand their evolution. For example, the president of Denver's Free-Lock hub in the mid 1950s seems to have left to start Cutlas Gear in Illinois, then moved it to Vinton Iowa and renamed it Cutlas Tool. The early cutlas hub that looks similar to the Kelly hub has a patent all its own (filed by the president of cutlas at the time), so I'm not surprised it was built differently. There is a set of Kelly hubs for sale on eBay right now. - Dave (eWillys). |

A little more digging and it seems that Da Ruben L. Beck patented this hub: https://www.google.com/patents/US2874814 It is close, but not quite exactly, like the Kelly Hub. It uses balls and springs in a way similar to the Kelly hub and it has a similar shape.
What's most interesting is that Da Ruben L. Beck is the same person as D. L. Beck, the person from whom Kelly purchased his top company: https://cj3b.info/Hardtops/Beck.html If this is correct, and the Kelly Hubs were built from Beck's invention, then the Kelly Hubs were first manufactured in the late 1950s (patent was first filed in 1957 and awarded in 1959). That's my working theory for now .. .thanks for the helpful photos!
