Greetings, I have a chance to buy a rolling chassie, says 50's jeep....looks like a 3a to me but I noticed the front cross-member (the one under the radiator) is formed channel not round tube. Does that help narrow down the year? owner "knows nothing about jeeps" Thanks Joe

The Ford GPW from WWII had a formed channel as the front x member that has an open bottom.
My 66 cj5 has a formed front x member that is boxed closed on the bottom.

Cj2a, M38, Cj3a had round on all that I have seen. I've never noticed on a 3b.

Others will have more information but your best assurance is to take measurements.

CJ5 has a channel front cross member also. Does it have gussets on the front frame horns?

Tom in RI and Wee Willy thanks for the info, Wee Willy not sure what gussets you mean, Up by the front bumper didn't see any, but the front horns look boxed if that helps, darn! starting to think it's a cj5. thanks again Joe

Measure the wheelbase.  For "'50s Jeeps" CJ-5 was 81", 3B 80".
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable
