Flatfender Saturday shop day.

Dad drove his international tow truck over to my shop to help me work on desert dog.

This little dry air cleaner I rigged up, was not working very well in the heavy dirt out here on Windy Sage Jeep Farm.
I kept plugging the little air cleaners and having to replace them every 3 to 4 weeks.
It’s dusty here in the desert.
I usually put a heavy layer of grease on the base of the air cleaner to make sure no dirt can sneak by but I did not do that on this one Ouchand you can see the dirt trail across the base!so dirt got through! And it plugged so heavy With dust it pulled the paper loose and was sucking dirt through the filter element. Angry

This is something  you never want to see when you take the air elbow off!! The poor dog had been sucking so much dust and dirt there was a build up of it on the throat of the carburetor OuchEmbarrassed

I’m pretty embarrassed that this happened, Let this be a warning if you’re running in heavy dust and dirt make sure your air cleaner connections are tight and sealed.

I had the original oil bath air cleaner off my blue Jeep in inventory so I got it out to clean it up, the desert dog was missing one of the original brackets on the firewall so I went out to the bulldog Jeep and was able to find the bracket I needed and the special little bolts with the wing head.
The bulldog Jeep didn’t come with oil bath air cleaner and somebody had converted it to a dry air  cleaner years ago.

 Okay tow truck is awesome!

The 90 degree elbow going to the carburetor, what is that from or originally intended for?

The elbow is a cut down radiator hose, I think it was the old top rad hose off my Cummins.
The carb isn’t cj the top throat is way smaller. ??? It was on it when I bought desert Dog.
I have a original metal cross tube and elbow, went to install it and no go.
My cross tube is abs pipe.

We had a very tense few hours in late June.
A wild fire was started on a neighbors property and quickly spread!!
I knew I needed to be prepared, but having only been there since May I hadn’t gotten a fire line prepare like I had planned.
I grabbed shovels and my tank sprayer.

I decided if it did get to us a shovel wasn’t going to do much.

I called my Dad, (He’s been a wildland fire fighter for close to 30 years and contracts his dozers and equipment to the BLM)
He was an hour away from being home and told me I could go get his D6 Cat and trail it on the ditch road to my place and put in a line. He lives a few miles away.
I jumped in my jeepster and raced down the driveway.
When I got to the county road and hit third gear, there was a big slamming sound!
In my hurry I forgot to latch my hood!!!
It flew open slammed back and then flew completely off!!!
Crashing onto the pavement and then sliding.
Rrrrrrrrrr I moved it off the road and kept going.

When I got to the Cat of course the battery’s where dead and it wouldn’t start!!!
One plus was there was no hood in my way for jump starting and setting my idle high.
After spending over an hour trying to start the Cat,I called my wife to see what was going on over the hill, I couldn’t see anything from where the Cat was.
She reported the BLM got to the fire shortly after I left and had two planes drop retardant and one helicopter drop water. And the hand crew was mopping up!!!
They got it stopped on the hill above our property.
THANK YOU BLM

Nothing more to do but stop and retrieve my hood.

At the end of the day our only damage was the jeepsters hood.
If the fire had made it to us no buildings or Jeeps  where in danger.
And I put in the fire lines like I should of before anything was on fire.
So lessons learned the hard way, ( latch your hood) ( put in fire breaks before fire season)

Ya I’m bummed the Jeepster has a fairy straight body so this sucked.
The worst part is when landed it hit on the front lipOuch

If you look at the last picture, above the driver turn signal you can see the dent.
It tweeked it pretty bad so now it won’t close very easy.

Oh well not like I was going to put a $5000 paint job on it Sleepy

It will close if I push down on it and latch the side hook.
Like my grandpa used always say, Goodnuf for farm use.

I've been noticing that what I consider not much fire danger is wrong. Seems that stuff burns much easier then you would think. The California fires for example. The trees around the trailer parks are still a bit green and the metal sided trailer houses are melted and burned to a bare frame. So, that means the air is superheated and causes anything that will burn to ignite without the wall of flame being required to ignite it. Seeing that wall of flame in your picture is something to fear . If the wind is blowing, and fire makes it's own weather, I wonder if a fire line is enough. Reduction of fuels might be another thing to consider.

So, in closing Ben, when are you buying a slurry bomber? Helicopter? LOL

I love your Dad's wrecker. very cool.

Fuel reduction is number one on my mind, I will be removing sage brush near the house to reduce the fuel load.
Seeing those flames coming toward our property sure gave me a sinking feeling.
A fire line isn’t going to do much if the fires moving fast.

I witnessed this first hand while driving chase truck for Dad on a fire years ago. The fire was heading towards interstate 84, so they closed the freeway now that’s a big fire line right. That will stop it.

WRONG!!!!
The fire jumped across it and kept going!!
I literally drove through where it was burning across!
Not the best feeling knowing I had just filled the drop tank with 100 gallons of diesel.

The only thing that stopped that fire was the snake river, now that’s a fire line!

One benefit of the fire line is it gives me a safe Jeep trail to patrol, without the fear of starting my own fire.
