Looking for dimensions for the baffle washer on the dipstick. Mine is missing, like most I've seen. Has this been documented? I know I should be fine without it but since I am putting this together I figured why not put one on now.

( I know I could also just use a random washer )

If I may ask, what is the purpose of the baffle anyway ? Is it to keep oil splash going to filler cap top to a minimum ?

I don’t have documentation on this, but if you pull the pan you will see that the dipstick is really close to the crank and if it gets waving around in there it will whack on the crank and make a heck of a noise to the point that you might think the motor is about to come apart. I suspect that the baffle is an attempt to mitigate this problem.

ScoutPilot, says the baffle has a roll in the design of the air flow system.

I had no idea there was a baffle. Anyone got  picture of a stock one on the dipstick?

Look in your oil pan, the baffle is likely laying there. Mine was.

I have 2 here to look at neither has a baffle on them. Cut away view in the service manual (fig 70) for the PCV system and (fig 30) seem to  show it to be positioned just above the end of the tube. It appears to be just smaller than the tube. However,  fig  70 also shows that the tube is relieved on the outside probably for the generator. This won’t allow much of a baffle attached to the dipstick. Figure 71 of the F head shows no baffle. It could be one of those now you see it now you don’t design details.

Your baffle might not be there (or it might be in the oil pan, as previously noted) but you should see where it goes on the stick, as it is likely to show evidence of having had the baffle crimped on at one time.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

I have a NOS GPW Ford F stamped dipstick with the baffle in good shape.  But, I am out of town until the middle of next week.
When I get home I will post some photos and dimensions.

Here is a pretty good photo of one off of Flea Bay.  It is for sale as an "NOS M38 ONLY"  dipstick, although I am not sure what would make the M38 L134 dipstick different - perhaps cap venting for the waterproof fording system?

Sounds like we're all baffled on this one.  Smile

Stan's theory is a good one.  It might also just be an attempt to slow oil spill if the jeep rolls over.

I looked to see what I could find,

The correct one is 1.138” in diameter with 6 .25” holes.

The other is my “special M38 only” out of my M38.

Hope this helps

Mike
