Every time I think to nail down a serial #/date. Its to the search engine and hope to remember something about the post. Not always successful.

I'm going to have to add another page to my notebook for the chronology. Sam are and TR  compiling your own "quick reference" list? What a great idea! Date and serial range for all the varified changes. Make a great sticky.

I found two references to the spare tires on the 2As on the BOM. The first is dated 10/13/48 stating there are 5 tires and wheels required per vehicle and that the tires must all be from the same manufacturer. Being this late in the year, it might apply to CJ3As.

My other notation is from 9/15/47 and states 'Omit the following item when spare tire is installed by production 640800 Rim and Disc Assembly. '

Not sure what conclusions can be drawn from that other than they did leave the factory with just a wheel and no tire. It does not state why they left without a tire unfortunately.

Another place in the BOM states that certain things were installed on the Jeep on the production line, but it was up to the conversion company to provide a running Jeep. I thougt that was pretty interesting. That pertained to compressor, generator and fire Jeeps.

Here is a pic of a CJ2A from the first shipment to Sweden in April 1946.
No tire on the spare either.

and look Sam!...It's got a glass bowl!!!!! <g>

...and it also looks like they have white grass in Sweden! (Betcha that's tough t' mow, too!)

And, another confirmation that, by then, the column shift knobs were black.

The other thing that Roger's photo makes clear is that these things got to the customer without spares in that time frame.  That means that the bunch in the photo outside the factory were without spares because they were about to receive compressors or some other gear.

Some more pics of CJ2A´s without tire on the spare. the second pic I think is the same Jeep as in the previous post. Look close at the tailgate on the first one, the word "FREDSJEEP" (PEACEJEEP) was painted on all CJ2A´s at the tailgate and the windshield by the importer SCANIA-VABIS to not confuse it with the MB. (lots of them come to Sweden after the war)

Jack, don´t you have white grass over there? Easy to mow, use a torch!

Not the best pics (scanned from a Swedish book) but very informative.

Notice the MB window slides on the windshield too!

BTW, does anyone make the correct tie down straps for the canvas tops?

Still think those are trim rings (with the center section not installed) if you look at them, the profile near the edge of the rim is convex while the profile of the spare wheel is concave.

I agree with Gale, seem to be wide, 'wheelcover type' trim rings. The spare rim seems to match the wheels and it's not two colors. (compare the rim contours that Gale is referring to with the shadow on the spare rim, you'll see a difference)

And, the spare is a slotted wheel.  If the others were not dressed with trim rings, you'd have a Jeep late enoough to have a rear exhaust with a mix of solid and slotted wheels.  Seems very unlikely.

The rims looks like MOTORWHEEL  rims. Look at the round "DIMPLE?" around the lugholes.
I never heard about them making solid rims.

Ant the top looks as tight as my top!

Great pictures, brings back some good memories. I lived about 35 miles north of Grand Rapids,Mi. in the late 1940's and early 50's. The father of a I kid I went to school with. farmed with a CJ. Come hunting season it was great for covering a lot of back country while hunting from the front seat.
thanks,

Sorry, just can't help myself but just one more

That's something I just found from 1956. The caption for the picture says that's Tony Curtis touring a willys factory
In preparation for a move.

It 'looks' like by now and I'm guessing....that most of the women have probably been replaced by men who came home after WWII.
