Group 15-01 : Generator

(click thumbnails to enlarge)

p/n  640153  SUPPORT, generator, assembly

p/n  A-1395   INSULATOR, generator support   qty. 2

p/n  A-1397   BOLT, hex. hd., 5/16"-24 x 1 29/32"  Insulator support  qty. 2

2 different ones shown.  Both identical in every respect, except one pair has a chamfered bolt end, while the other is flat.  Fully machined bolts.  Note the radius between 5/16" shank & large shoulder (2nd. photo):

p/n  A-1401  WASHER, flat, 21/64" I.D.

With chamfered hole to clear bolt shoulder radius.

p/n  A-1396  WASHER, flat, 33/64" I.D.  qty. 2

1 1/8" OD, same nominal thickness as A-1401

How they all fit together:  (All dimensions measured from actual parts)

Distance between generator mounting ear pads:  6 11/16" (inside, GDZ-4817 generators, 2 of them)
Distance between bracket & engine plate mounting rings:  6 1/4" (outside)

Centering the generator ears on the rings, leaves .2187" gap on each end.  This gets filled with the bushing & small-hole washer when it's all buttoned up.

The small-hole washer (in green) gets clamped tight between generator ear & bolt shoulder.  Note that this washer, no matter how thick or thin, does not use up any large shank space.  It's primary purpose is to center the bolt shank w/in the mounting ring so the bushing sits on-center:

The large-hole washer (in blue) slides on the shank, and does take up available shank space:

Using the generator & mounting ear dimensions shown in the drawing above, the "ideal" washers are both .088" thick, giving these following installed dimensions.  The .5" bushing channel would be dead-center in the .5" wide ring.  The bushing flanges would undergo .019" crush each:

Out of 2 sets of A-1396 large-hole washers, and 1 set of A-1401 small-hole washers, the measured dimensions are:
  • A-1401 pair: .089" & .092"
  • A-1396 pair: .085" & .088" (paired w/above A-1401s)
  • A-1396 pair: .090" & .095" (no A-1401's w/this pair)
13 ga. steel is .0897" (+/- .005" cold-rolled, or +/- .007" hot-rolled), so I'd say they were stamped from 13 ga.  Probably anything from .085" to .095" will work.  Thinner puts less squeeze on the generator side bushing flange, thicker puts more.

Regarding the "Chamfer" in the A-1401 small-hole washer:

All 4 of my bolts have a radius (.030"-.040") between the 5/16" shank and the .5" shoulder.  Others have found bolts w/out the radius.

A plain-hole washer would not fit properly on a radiused bolt, leaving a gap (from .009-.015").  Onlys fits nicely on a non-radiused bolt:

The chamfer eliminates any possibility of interference.  Fits nicely on either type bolt:

The full assembly:
