Is there a data base or list of head casting numbers available? Looking for a way to make it easier to identify the type and date of manufacture of a head.

While we're here, I'll throw out a question:
All of the early jeep heads without ribs have a 639660 or 639660C casting number, according to the page linked to. When ribs were added, the casting number changed to 640161, and later to 800376. I have a "smooth" head, no ribs, with "WILLYS" and "JEEP" on it. It should have a 639660C casting number, but it has "640XXX" on it. The reason for the X's is that the last three digits have been ground off. In place of the last three, in the ground-off area, has been stamped "035" with a "7" stamped above the "3". Has anyone seen anything like this?Confused  BW

Bruce:

The early civilian jeep cylinder heads had W.O. part number 640161 cast into them.  The earliest 640161 heads had smooth tops with no ribs. But there is no such early CJ head pictured on the web site you  mentioned, so the web site is incomplete (and thus a bit misleading) in that regard.  The compression ratio for head 640161 was 6.48 to 1.

W.O. part number 640035 was for a cylinder head for the model 442 (1942) Americar that had a 7.0 to 1 compression ratio.  So I'd guess that your cylinder head with the last 3 cast part numbers ground away and replaced by stamped numbers "035" was milled to increase its compression ratio to about 7.0 to 1 (hence the separate stamped "7") and was, therefore, marked accordingly. Nice find for jeeping in the Colorado mountains! Smile
Happy Jeep Trails,

Fred,
Thumbs Up I like your thinking!Clap  A good find indeed. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then.
That head came off of a 3J stamped block that was in a '47 or '48 CJ2-A, but may have had a connection with an Americar sometime in its past, because the engine had a road-draft tube and early style push-in dipstick.  Thanks for the info.  BW

I've found another one. This one is a ribbed head, with "WILLYS", "JEEP", and the firing order and tappet clearance at .014" on it. The casting number is an "8" followed by a space and then "0161". Any ideas, anyone?   BW
