We have a thread about our jeeps working but nothing about real off road aggressive wheeling. I use mine to its limits. I shattered the rear a few times and now the 1945 is scrap and a stand in 1946 is in place till my cj5 Dana44 is complete. I know there are a bunch of us that really truly wheel. I'm sure there are a few of you guys that are newer members I don't know. I'd love to start this thread off with photos and or videos of us really putting these through the ringer. My YouTube link is below. My photo next to my name shows me wheeling.
But here are 2 passenger wheels almost 2 feet off the ground. Sorry for the poor pic. It was taken from bad video footage. |

I don't have a 2A that runs to wheel with, but my 3B gets wheeled a lot-just about every weekend in the summer.
And you don't need to break a lot of stuff doing it. Maybe I'm just old, but like most of the EU off-road crowd, I don't get embarrased stringing winch line. I find it is highly preferable to spitting a bunch of pieces on the trail (along with the oil slick), something just about anyone can do with little effort to just about any machine, no matter how it is set up.
My 3B, limited suspension flex and all, will still go more places with less damage than the JK Ruby. JK's, IMO, are just too damned big, at least for the mountain wheeling I like. There are more than a few boulders you will not be driving over with anything that doesn't actually fly and there isn't any place to drive around a lot of them (again, unless you can actually fly) so you have to fit between.

Hey Mike
You are my hero because you and only a few others on here that really use their Willys Jeeps...and I have to say my CJ2A will never see anything like this. I spent over a year and half, tying to get all the old dirt, grease and rust off of my 1947 CJ2A...it will get dirt from my long dirt driveway but thats it....I spent 10 seasons running oval track and it was a dirt track so I have to say I have washed enough dirt off of vehicles to last me the rest of my days....
I will drive mine but more on an asphalt surface...just cant bring myself to go an wheel it...not really into fixing broken 65 year old parts either...
you are the bomb Mike G.
Keep on doing what you are doing...you are truely using your Willys Jeep and thats a good thing...

Thanks Mike. Lol.
There are parks and off road areas to take your jeeps to. In Keen New Hampshire there is Keene Jeep for you northern guys. They have a great jeep club and do local runs on land open to them for use. Well even if its not a 2a as long as its a flat fender. Post photos of your jeep in action. Those that are still in the process of building I know how you feel. My 2a took me 7 years. For you guys this should just be jeep porn. So post some photos of your flat fenders wheeling. This is stuck! |

Mike,
your Videos where one of the most motivating helps during the "frustrating" periods of the rebuild. I don´t know if this counts for "wheeling" but anyway: We thought that "Clint" could do his "shakedown" more efficiently in a "historic" SprintRally competition and entered him. He looked very "Senior" in the paddock but in the end did better than the driver and co-driver. We messed up pretty good with the second part of the roadbook and nearly doubled the total distance. BUT 115Mls in a hair over 4Hrs isn´t so bad (original distance was 62 Mls) AND we had to refuel! On road testing succesfully accomplished facing fierce and much younger competition (will have to fix the transmission leak in the winter off race period) And now that i have fixed his wobbling front propellershaft we will shake him further down OffRoad, Paris-Dakar wise Keep on racing Freddy |

I have not done a lot of wheeling recently, but my '2A has seen a lot of trails over the years, mostly in the 90's. . . . Jeep Jamborees in Murphy, NC, Daniel Boone, KY, later Camp Jeeps, and a bunch of other events. . . also lots of crazy stuff on trails near here in VA, and western MD. (mostly closed now, )
These photos are not too clear, but all I have from the early Jamborees. Tellico, near Murphy, NC This is on "Helicoptor Pad" trail at Tellico, this is before it gets difficult. (even here a LOT steeper than it looks in the photo) This is when the '2A still had 9" brakes, and I was thinking "Please Lord, let us make it to the top, because I do not want to have to back down with these brakes" I forget the name of the trail at Tellico, but this is at the bottom, before a long muddy climb. This is at the top of Mistletoe, the last climb over a big rock. Again, a lot steeper than it looks. This is one of my most memorable climbs. It was basically a steep, 150 yard long, twisty, rock-garden. (you can't see in photo the tough part of trail below) The '2A had open diffs then, and made it bottom to top without stopping. There were others even with lockers that had more trouble. . . at the banquet that night my friend overheard someone say "did you hear a flat fender went up Mistletoe with open diffs". . . . my '2A was a "legend" . . well, maybe in my own mind. Another photo of "Helicopter Pad" a couple years later. . . My '2A still has the dent in rocker panel from this section. I tried to hug the left side of trail for the best line, and at one point slammed down on a rock hanging out the side. Stuck!! This is in Daniel Boone KY. I was trying to straddle a rut, going up a steep section, but the rear slipped into the rut. . . I thought for a moment we were going to flip over. I have always said these Jeeps were built tough. . . Mine has a 225 Buick V6 engine, but was basically stock drivetrain, T-90 to wheels. I did replace the 9" brakes with 11" early on. The small brakes were dangerous with 32" tires on steep trails.
After many years of wheeling, the spindle bolts pulled out of hub in the front on a rocky trail. (that was odd feeling to have your wheel literally fall off). I replaced it with a Dana 30 and Saginaw steering out of '75 CJ-5, and have been running that since with no problems. Edited by JeepFever - 20 Aug. 2013 at 11:28am |

I like the rough trails in Utah and here is a photo of me when I backed down a dugway so they could video me coming back up. I backed the Jeep against a wall of rock and dirt and it ripped the valve stem out. So I winched the Jeep free and then climbed the hill with a flat left rear tire. I never would have thought a Jeep could do that but it did. We changed the tire at the top of the dugway and continued on the trail.

Not sure this is considered real "Wheelin" but last winter I did to a bit of snow bank bustin'. Tried to see how far I could get up into this mountain trailhead parking lot. This is how far I got. I might try it again this year since I have added an Lock Right locker to my rear end. I have a trip planned at the end of the month. If it actually happens I'll put up some photos. (If I remember to take any.)
Different spot, same day.

I like the restored jeeps, but I also have a soft spot for USING a jeep. IMHO everyone needs at least two jeeps. One to show your restoration skills and another to drive like ya stole it. If I spent a lot of time on a tub making it perfect I wouldn't be wheeling it but there are plenty of less than perfect tubs on driver jeeps. Off road is where the Willys really shows its stuff, and if you haven't had a chance to offroad in a flatty you don't know what you are missing.
I like that picture with two wheels in the air and no driver.... Mike, are you RC'ing your 45 now? I have wheeled my GPW in New Hampshire and it is a LOT of fun. Especially when you drive right by higher dollar rigs having trouble. In Texas near me I have yet to find any place where I can freely drive around, so if anyone knows of trails near Brownwood or Abilene let me know. I do know I can drive to the coast and find some beach running. It would be great to find something we could go to as a group if we ever have a get together in Coleman. Of course that might require me to have something other than the DJ in driving condition. Pintojeep or my 47 both need finishing. For now I have to be satisfied with the occasional right seat rides I get in Colorado. The Colorado Trail rides are bucket list items and not to be missed if you have an opportunity.

I have wheeled my Jeep and Landcruisers for years. The current re-build of my '47 is intended to facilitate off- road use - I have a stoutly built FF axle and am adding a T90C and Lock Right locker for the Dana 41 rear.
I use this Jeep in Oregon, Nevada, etc. for bird hunting in the back country - lots of bad roads/wagon trails/fire trails... or no trails at all. I chose to use the Jeep instead of getting a UTV.
