I've got three different versions with all the same number on the casting A-1163...none of them are the are the number from the '45 parts book, A-1166.
There is a change in the part # in the '49 parts list with another part #
A-1165 Manifold, intake and exhaust, assembly (up to Ser. No. 148679)
645305  Manifold, intake and exhast, assembly (after Ser. No. 148679)

First version looks like the pic in both parts list, '45 and '49. this had the pipe plugs on the boss on end of the manifold with the rear one driving the vaccumn wiper. again A-1163 is cast into the part. (I have two of these, one on Jeep #58500 and also on #34692)

Next version (A-1163 cast into the manifold) has the 2 pipe plugs on the end of the intake manifold along with another boss on top of the manifold and this was used to run the wipers (neighbors Jeep with a MB slat motor)

Last I have another A-1163 cast manifold with no machining on the outside bosses and the top boss machined for the wiper (I'm assumming here)

Does anyone have anymore insight as to what I have here? and does anyone have a manifold that has the correct A-1166 or A-1165 cast # on theres?

Gary:

The casting number is rarely the same as Willys part number.  The part number is assigned after final machining.  Now you'd think the 3 intakes would have different part numbers, since they are machined differently.  Beats me why they don't.

From discussions on the G503, I'm under the impression that the ones w/end fittings were for military use.

#16279 has the 3rd type, w/fitting for the vacuum wiper only.

A new wrinkle on manifold castings.  While getting it ready to paint, discovered my intake manifold was bad, so went in search of another.  Now have 2 identical manifolds w/different casting numbers.  Looks like one of them might have been a boo-boo by the guy setting the type.

Pictures are small so I can get 'em all in.  They all link to larger versions:

discussing today with Sean, what i can consider to be the most correct intake/exhaust manifold for the '45, we came to the conclusion that an MB manifold would probably be the most accurate, i have 2 MB's in the garage, each with different configurations..ie: one with a vacuum port, one without...it is obvious i need the one with, since the '45 had vacuum operated wipers. but then i continued the discussion with the fact that i had one more type of manifold not shown in Gary's photos up top...best i can offer, is that this setup is early MB, or before, that would have used a road draft tube, as there is no provision for the PCV. and if you look close, on the left intake runner, there is a factory drilled/tapped hole, with a steel plug..wrong side to be for anything vacuum...ONLY number on the set is on the exhaust runner, and it is A-659...low

...i have been informed, over on the the G503, that this is a rare, and hard to find 1942 MB manifold...so, it can be discounted from the 2A consortum.....

To add some more clarity or confusion to the picture, both of my current 2As, 15292 and 122031, have the type of manifold shown in the first of Gary's 3 pictures.   To me, reading the other posts and seeing what I have, it looks as those these intake manifolds were cast, machined and installed "Willys" nilly.

Hi Folks,
I was looking for the original plumbing configuration for the vacuum windshield wiper connection on the early 2A Intake manifold. My interpretation from the parts list is that there is a bushing , 1/4 x 1/8 # A1265, presumed in the rear 1/4" pipe thread port? and then some flare fitting, maybe # 384568? These manifolds here in this post show the connection on the 1/8" port on the top of the rear manifold tube...Comment? Anyone have a more clear documentation? My Intake manifold has cast # A1163 and three tapped ports, (2) 1/4" in the front bosses and (1) 1/8" on the top of the rear tube.
Thanks

Willys "clear documentation"?  Where have you been? Wink

The wiper connection has been found in both places, but with Willys penchant for "using up" MB parts, it's not yet clear if this was a random occurrence, or done during a certain range of vehicle numbers.

Based on the parts list, I'd venture to guess that the intended location was the 1/8" pipe hole on top of the rear runner:
  • #5138 - PLUG, sq. hd., 1/4" (Intake manifold) : 2 are called for, to plug the holes in the side bosses
  • #A-1265 - BUSHING, reducing, 1/4" to 1/8" : for the top hole, a full description should probably be '1/4" flare to 1/8" NPT'.  Although they don't say it's also an ell fitting.
Once again though, for whatever reason, Willys occasionally deviated from what they originally intended.

HI Sean,
As usual it is difficult to say...but didn't the MB use the 1/4" hole for their wiper?
Certainly the quantity of two 1/4" plugs, #5138 in Group 10-19, is being called for.
Then, in the 45 parts list Group 31-13 for the vac w/s wiper it lists the 384568 nut as an inverted flared tube. And the bushing A-1265 as 1/4-to-1/8 reducing.
Since they don't appear to list a 1/8" plug at all, you are probably correct in your assumptions.
As far as 'documentation'...I was looking for any photos or such that may 'prove' the theory. Certainly Garys manifolds support the elbow theory for the part # 384568. Willys can't be a dependable source based on just the parts lists.Wink

Don't know.  Maybe someone w/MB savvy could say.

As I recall, there were a few photos posted of earlier CJ-2A using the rear 1/4" tap.  I believe it was that discussion which prompted Garys post here.  Would have to search them out.

I just posted this on Captainpattson's thread. I didn't see this manifold thread. "I noticed your intake manifold with the cross mounted studs. I had two 2a's that had that style manifold. One was a 47 and it had an aluminum adapter to mount the WO carb. The spacer was an inch thick. It worked OK. The other Jeep was my current 48. it had a Holley single barrel carb mounted to it. It worked OK at low altitude but when I moved to high country it was unacceptable. I think it was made for a six cylinder engine." It's strange I had these on two of the three 2As I had. I swapped out the "cross studs" for an "inline studs" manifold on my current Jeep.

This type of manifold with the studs 90 deg is for a Kaiser Supersonic or early pickup/wagon that used the Carter YF carb, the bolt spacing is slightly wider and a W-O will not fit it............May also fit a 2wd DJ series Jeep.

Going to drag this back from the dead for a min.

I have the supersonic head, and a intake with 90 degree studs.  Made an adapter to fit the WO carb, worked fine.  Now have the correct intake to install.
