The ford focus would be a descendant of the escort which I believe was the first front wheel drive compact ford made in mass. The Model A is a descendant of the T and then maybe the fairlane then crown victoria blah blah. The 66 charger is a descendant of the 65/66 coronet even though they don't look totally alike.

How about this logic. The new jeep replaced the old jeep that replaced the wrangler that replaced the cj5 that replaced the cj3b that replaced the cj3a that replaced the cj2a that replaced the mb. So they are direct descendants because it replaced the vehicle before it in its class. The cherokee never replaced the cj5, it replaced pretty much the big cherokee. just my one cent.

This is like comparing Betty Grable or Lana Turner to one of the many modern beauty queens. A lot depends on your historic perspective coupled with the perceived need for the particular model and its capabilities. The young guys will lean toward the younger blondes. Some models (pun intended) are softer, prettier and faster. My 2 cents.

In all of this your missing the CJ7, which ties the earlier CJs with the YJ......
I have owned a number of jeeps, from the 2a to CJ7 to YJ to TJ....... in my two cents, yes they are all decendants from the earlier. in some shape, manner or form, they have stretched, manipulated, and in some cases cushified the vehicle. The vehicles, up to at least the YJs are easy to work on, ride like a buckboard, and like to rot out from underneath you . the engines for the most part have been bullet proof, Gearing has for the most part been low, and really unusable except for rural driving. Yes even the YJ..... it was a dog on the highway with the 4cyl motor. so, for the guys... and girls, who love these jeeps, the lineage is there. Even for the TJ, the body follows the YJ and yes they went back to the round head lights, but you can swap all of the nose parts from a JY to a TJ........yes, from each on going year, they have improved safety items, because of government regulations. (You wouldnt want it any other way) After the TJ.... for me, yeah it still a jeep, but I like the older ones. Dad said there is an Azz for every seat.... you like what you like, you believe what you believe. lol.... (the views expressed above are from a man who is very tired and wants to go home........and have a beer...) thank you !

The Wrangler is the evolution of the Willys, yes. It went from the MB->CJ2A->3A->3B etc etc. It is still an off-road ready 4x4 with solid axles, removable top, removable doors, half door options, folding windshield, simple body, external tail lights, and all around rugged for a modern vehicle. If you took a soldier from WWII and placed him in the modern world, he would recognize the JK as a futuristic Jeep. I know all the die-hard fans don't like to believe it, but everything is evolving with technology, even vehicles. Saying the JK isn't a descendant from the MB is pretty ignorant. The JK is even under-powered like it's great grandpa

If you wish to cite "evolution" let me just state the obvious. Your average "modern" Jeep has evolved into a softie and will never see mud or a dirt road, much less, plow a field. It is a car, plain and simple. To make it into what "Great Grandpa" was, from the factory, requires the removal of the AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth, the power steering, the automatic transmission, at least two cylinders, the EFI, the CPU, the air conditioning, the soft seats and the seat belts. Great Grandpa was a rough, tough SOB. Evolved is the correct description, but into what?

If it didnt evolve it wouldnt be here anymore, and that would be sad. Its changed to stay competitive. If nothing evolved we would still be in caves.

If it had come to an end, our old Great Grandpa's would be worth more than they are. A final point, not all evolution is a good thing. While the shark has evolved into a smaller animal than it's predecessor, it is basically unchanged over millennia.

Don't quite know how to respond to the attitude being expressed here. Hope it is a joke.

It is a joke what said in my last post, this topic will never be answered. I just know i like all jeeps and i like the four door charger too, which i said when it came out "that pos cant be a charger its four door".
Then i bought one and was like "well this is a nice car". Those independent suspension jeeps are amazing off road with their articulation and travel. Some of the power trains are amazing too They have more hp than my 80s truck. To each there own. |

Is the son always exactly like the father? or the grandfather? Not at all. I see no reason to not consider the modern wranglers direct descendants, if you want to look at it like a family.
But even look at the CJ2a, it's not the same as the MB/GPW jeeps either. Has a nice fancy tailgate, Newfangled automatic wipers, different grill and headlights, no glove box, and most had no shovel/axe mounts and so on, right? It's a slow change every new model that comes out. Really the biggest change that I can think of over the years was from the YJ to the TJ. When it went from leaf springs to coil springs. That was more than a cosmetic change.
As far as I know, the wranglers have never had independant suspension, it's always been solid axle. I bet that will be changing very soon though, with the next generation, I bet it'll have independent suspension in the front at least.

Should I mention Jeeps have had only one mother, but many fathers?
Bantam Willys Ford Willys Overland Kaiser Willys AMC Chrysler and it's partners, Mitsubishi, Lamborghini, Daimler-Benz, Fiat, et al) While all share some DNA, not all share the same DNA.

I sure did waste a lot of time building up my 47 2A trying to get all the correct parts when I could have just went out and bought a Wrangler and just think all those drivers wouldn't be upset at me for going 40 MPH down the road
