I'm negotiating a trade. My 74 Dart Sport / half-assed 71 Demon clone for this beauty:
  She's one of these:  A 1951 Dodge M43 Ambulance, Korean War vintage. Her original unit numbers are still there under the easily peeled paint.  I have a line on a full set of rims out on the coast. She'll need an engine and trans at the very least, as they're completely missing. The rest of the body is all there, with the front end sheet metal tucked in the back. I'm thinking to repower with a diesel, possibly a Mercedes OM617 turbo and adapt it to a 4 or 5 speed manual trans. Preferably something with overdrive, as this baby is geared 5.88 from the factory. Happily, it's a divorced transfer case setup, so I can use almost anything as long as it has the grunt to move a 7700lb rig. More pics to come once we settle on delivery, etc. Les

Wow. That's going to be some project. Parts are going to be a little harder to find than for a CJ I would imagine, but you would have a real rare ride when you have it finished.
 You are going to need plenty  for this. Good luck and keep us posted.

So far, she has all the rare, expensive parts. That tire carrier on the driver's door runs about $350, and the tri-handled retainer runs another $100.
Some parts are fairly easily had. A bunch can be fabricated without too much difficulty. I think it will be the wiring that will be the hardest to get right. It has aftermarket, mismatched gauges too. Originals will run about $250 all told assuming I keep it 24v. We'll have to see where she leads us.  Oh, that spotlight poking out of the roof is anther $300 - $400 reconditioned... Has almost all the lights. All the sheet metal is there. Tires and rims are going to be expensive, though. Unlike the jeep, this will be a long-term project. I won't be obsessed with keeping it driveable and minimizing down-time.

Nice find!.... in reality to bring the found truck to condition of the restored one in the above photo will take money and a stack of it. A 4 cyl. Isuzu fits in very nice and are affordable, the NP200 T/C is an issue, they like to run under 50mph and make terrible heat above that, mores so with HP and torque above the stock setup, I know of one that had a SBC installed and would boil the gear lube, most repowers swap it to an NP205 what are not terribly hard to find.

Rick and Lee, thanks! Aside from the heat issues, how stout is the unit? It wouldn't be too hard to fab up an external oil cooler for it. I have a couple ideas for powering a mopar slant-six oil pump plumbed into the fill & drain holes to an a aftermarket cooler. I don't know how effective it would be, but it's worth a shot.

Your certanly not the first one to attempt installing a cooler, my M715 uses the same TC, plenty of info on this at the M715 Zone, or most likely the various Power Wagon forums. As I said before the NP205 is the younger sister of the NP200, fairly easy swap, NP205 was very popular in Dodge, Ford, GM and International trucks as a divorced mounted TC...... I would suggest spending some time on one of the powerwagon forums, plenty of info on these old jewels. The Slant six has been done, I've never seen one in person though. Lee

BTW, the NP200 is built like a tank. It uses timken tapered bearings on the shafts, as long as the end play is kept in order and you keep it full of oil it's a good unit other than it's an extremely noisy runner
 . . The NP205 runs straight roller bearings and is very quiet.Lee

I think the drivetrain out of a Cummins 12 valve Dodge Ram 2500 would be the hot ticket....I have no idea what kind of a job it would be except that it will be spendy.
Looks like another cool project.
