I suppose the type of milage, (woods or highway), oil quality, and driver treatment, make a big difference. My '48 had 38000 on the odometer, was used on a ranch and beat, and it already has a different engine and transmission in it. Hope I get 40,000 out of mine--------if I live long enough to drive it that far. John

 Does anyone know what this steering column may have came out of? I need to get a new ignition switch and I'm not sure what to order. |

Hard to say for sure, GM used that steering wheel on several cars including Camaros and Chevettes. I would assume that the switch was the same in all models, I would start with late 70s Camaro, I don't remember Chevettes having a tilt column.

The CJs also had that tilt option....probably get something at 4WD Hardware or Quadratec. May just be a factory column.

I saw that horn button and thought Chevette.. but it may just be a Chevette/Camaro etc wheel on the stock column as mentioned..
Good thing about GM columns is the locks etc are pretty much standard. I remember using GM blanks on Jeep keys in the past. What is the old key blank for? |

The key switch is stuck in the ON position. I can pull the key out though.

Sounds like some steering column surgery is in your future. I'm pretty sure you have to pull the wheel, and use a lock plate puller to get the snap ring out of the lock plate to access the lock retainer from inside the column. I would expect there are a bunch of how to's on the net as the GM column is a very popular hot rod part.
Here's just one, you have to click on the see all pics at the bottom of the page for it to make any sense. If you cannot turn the cylinder to lock position sounds like there is either some damage to the rack gear system or you might have to drill out the tumblers to make it turn (less likely as you have the key) If damaged they are a pain to fix but it isn't really that hard. Might as well rebuild everything in the column while you are there if it needs help anywhere else. (Is the tilt mechanism nice and tight?)

When looking for parts keep in mind that the lock cylinder and the ignition switch are two different components.

I took the lock cylinder out, took it to the parts store, and got a switch for a '78 Camaro. It was a match. I've installed it and all is good now.
