How do I safely get the cap off. Don't wanna go Boom! Tank at 1/4 . So need to deal with this problem asap. Any help,as always is greatly appreciated

I have 'heard' that a slide hammer dent puller can be used to pop the lock...I have never done it though.

I'm kinda curious why you need a locked gas cap. Somebody might siphon 10 gallons, but I think you could win the lottery first! MHO
Either way, lost key or empty tank, you don't move. At least with an empty tank you can throw some more gas in!! Wink

where I worked there was more a worry of what could be put in, not taken out. Some jealous young pups more than willing to dump something in. Jeep wasn't  always in sight.  Retired now no need to worry

Its not what they take out of your tank.... its what they put in it that worries me. My Dad told me how in his teen years he and his brothers  pissed in the lawn mower gas tank. It started for their Dad ok, but didn't run for long. Some blue was seen floating out of the shed when my Grandfather emptied the "bad gas" out of the tank only to discover what "octane" was in really there. A few hot summer days after the initial fill up had given the "fuel" a distict boquet. Just sayin'

I have a locking gas cap in my stash somewhere.  I agree with the posts that it prevents "additives" that could do damage where you either pay for a tow and/or repairs.

If I was out on the road - depending on the circumstances - I'd consider removing the seat and float (with the tools I always have in the tool box) and fill up like the WWII jeeps or set up an auxiliary tank/hose straight to the pump as the alternative is a tow truck.  If I was at home, I'd call a locksmith.

I keep a box of misc. keys in the garage, try any keys you might have. I don't think the gas cap lock cylinders are that complex. Some lock out kits have a key blank for picking gas caps. I have been able to cut the outside metal cover off with a good sharp pair of side cutters, exposing the locking mechanism with little chance of sparks.

Drive it to a lock shop.
Let them come out and pick it open for you.
What I would do if it were me.
Yea, I'm a locksmith.
