No? Me either!  But, I never let that stop me.  This 2001 has been running on three of four cylinders for years.  Still runs like a scalded dawg but thought i would take a peek.  Pulled the valve cover then the two overhead cams.  These are the 3 intake valves per cylinder and in the back are two large exhaust valves per cylinder. The 4 holes are the wells for the spark plugs. Pretty clean for a 10 year old engine but only has 60,000 miles.  I guess the head is next and can be pulled without pulling the engine acording to the manual.

Ralph, do a compression test before you go any farther..you will need to reassemble the cams and timing components tho. . It will help a lot in diagnosis. IIRC the valve clearances are set by shims, somethinhg you may have to hire out to someone with shims. If you also check the clearnces before disassembly it will help, and don't get the cups and shims out of order....

(Assuming this is the same as teh VW's I used to work on back in the day..)

Thanks Bill.  No compression in # 3 cylinder.  The caps for the cams are all numbered.

I think that engine uses hydraulic lifters. If you haven't taken the head off yet, crank it around and watch #3 valves for motion. Is one stuck? Is a cam worn?
Plan on a new timing belt while you are in there
