Has anyone replaced the stock wheel studs with studs with longer threads? I bought some studs for a mid seventies jeep and was wondering if anyone else has drilled the old hubs for the larger diameter/ longer studs? What p/n studs did you use and why?

I looked at Doormans website to try and find some longer studs.  There isn't too much available.  I recall one or two possible options that were quite long, but didn't have the best shoulder dimensions for the 11" drum brakes to ride on.

In the end, I went with '72 CJ5 studs from Napa.  Obviously, they were made for the 11" brakes.  Slightly longer, but not sure they would work for some of the really thick aluminum wheels.  Sound like CJ5 studs might be what you have?  For me, they pressed right in.

Here are a couple parts to look at, from Doorman.  All have 0.625-0.63 shoulder.

610-449 for a 2001 jeep grand cherokee 1/4" longer and threaded to the end
610-569 for a jeep liberty.  appears to be 1/4" longer but not threaded to the end
610-519 for a 2009 ford taurus.  appears to be 1/2"+ longer but doesn't appear to have a shoulder for the drum.
610-444 for a 2009 ford explorer.  just over 3/8" longer

the studs I bought are for a 75 cj5, they are 3/8 longer and the shoulder does fit the Cj3B drums I'm using on the rear axle and the 11" brake drum from the same year jeep. the studs out of the 2a hubs are .610 shoulders as are the holes in the hub. I will need to drill/ream the holes for the new studs and have access to reamers at work. should I size the holes to the smaller .630 or the larger .655 diameter the splines are .668 to get the proper "pinch"

Curious. My 2a hubs seemed to accept the cj5 studs without modification.    They were close enough to the .625. I certainly wouldn't drill any further than that. Larger holes will just remove more hub material. You might end up having to drill the drums then too, depending on the size shoulder you have.

The correct studs should just press in, no hole modifications needed to the hub.

After checking the dorman spec sheets, I found the 641-034 to be the studs I needed, they pressed in without hole modification and are 1/4" longer. Now to remember which way the keys go in.
