Greetings everyone! I just took delivery of my first jeep yesterday, though I've been trying to educate myself on these old girls for a while. It was advertised as a '47, but looking with a serial # of 210xx it appears to be a '46 based on the info on this site.

It appears to have been pretty much 'restored' & I put that in quotes because it seems unfair to say restored when I think everything above the frame rails looks like new reproduction items. It still needs a lot of little items like grommets for the firewall, floor mats & some other minor items. I'm hoping to pick your brains for knowledge & pass along anything I can be helpful with.

My first question is about gearshift knobs. I noticed the one on the transmission s wouldn't tighten up & when I unscrewed it I saw it has split from being over-tightened. It seems to be made of a somewhat soft plastic so I'd like to get something more durable.

Thanks!

Stugiv,
Welcome.  Post some picture of your CJ2A I am sure people would love to see it.

I am not an expert on the serial numbers but my 1946 was once a column shift Jeep its serial number is 42,XXX.  I would assume your was originally a column shift transmission.

Over the years people often switch  to a floor mounted shift tower.  The shift knob on the floor mounted transmission can either be a threaded or press on knob.

Welcome and congrats!  We do like pictures, lol, thousand words and all... i wouldn't get wrapped up in restored vs "restored" so long as you bought it accordingly.  Sometimes replacement sheet metal is the only option.  As for the knobs, I didnt actually see a question ;)  Any of the primary parts suppliers is going to have replacements available-

Thanks for the welcome! I bought it because I considered it to be 'driver' quality, not so pristine that I would want to leave it in the garage as a perfectly preserved original. It still needs a lot of finishing touches. I believe Kaiser Willys & Walcks are 2 of the popular parts providers?

Sorry I wasn't clear about the shift knob, I attached a pic of it below. It is the push on style. I was hoping to find something sturdier.

The shifter does have threads though they don't look great. I guess I'll see if I can find a nut of the correct size to try & clean them off. I assume a threaded knob will stay on better.

Here are a couple overview pics of it...

I need to find some grommets for these holes in the firewall & around the steering column & pedals.

Walcks and KW are well known... there are plenty of others.  Because of shipping costs I all but never buy just a shift knob, lol.  If youre ok with omix youd likely do better at rockauto.  Somethings ya can, some things you shouldnt... some folks steer clear altogether.

Thanks everyone! I wish I had the talent, time & place to do that kind of work myself.

One thing that doesn't appear to have gone together well is that the passenger seat rubs against the wheel tub. Not sure what the best option is to stop that from happening.

I should probably start a new thread.

Looks like your tub is a repro from MD Juan. The seat rest spot welded in the incorrect location is a dead give away. No matter, you have a nice rig to play with. Could you possibly post the body serial number from the front driver side toe board gusset?

I was derailed by the floor mats..... The knob you need has a brass thread insert in it. Appears someone tried intalling a "push on" style. The crap on the threads of you lever will come off with a die. I believe 5/15 Fine. Walck's are great to deal with.
