Looking good Thumbs Up   Any plans to gusset or brace the outside rear corners now that you took the rigidity of the rear panel out?

Dude, ya do nice work Wink

Thanks!

Yes, i intend to add a gusset to the sides. I'm considering more of a strut design. Then I started drawing fancy sheet metal designs with dimple died holes. But I'm thinking that may look out of place. So this brings me back to a simple strut.

We'll see...

So a small update...

We started digging into the front panel. The hope was that we could recycle the rear panel to the front. But alas, that was not meant to be.

Front panel - just too far gone.

So we cut that bad boy away so we can start anew. Order a new panel from D+L Bensinger. I had the panel on my porch in 30 hours. Incredible! So we'll start to fit the new panel this week. Then off to the blaster.

So I started the day just thinking I would remove the leftover sheet metal from the front panel. The goal was to drill out the welds and clean up the flange to get ready for the new panel.

I stayed out there a bit longer.

It took quite a bit of work to get here. I hammered in a 1/4 flange to the panel. This captured the floor and made things more solid. Instead of angle iron, I made the front header out of rectangular tubing. I found the reason these rust so bad, is they capture the recess in the panel. It just collects moisture. Not wanting to repeat that, I chose the tubing - leaving the recess exposed. Most folks will probably never notice the change. I think it makes the assembly stronger.

8-9 hours later, this is where we end.

More trailer work....

We added some struts to the rear to restore rigidity. I cut some stand offs and welded them to the frame. Then I made a 2x2 inch piece to spread the load on the sheetmetal. 1/2 inch square tube connects it all.

I initially thought about mimicking the original style Bantam struts. But it will interfere with my tail light plan. So they are mounted further back so as to not interfere with mounting tail lights.

I know....I know....not another picture of the tailgate! But I swear there is something to report here!

Another hour or so of hammer and dolly work brought us 90% home. Skim of filler will do the rest. Then added hooks pirated from the panels that were removed.

And finally....just a little mock up so you can see where my brain is headed....

Your an artist with the hammer and dolly. You make that metal sing. I swear, I tried it MANY times over many years. Couldnt even get a bad note. Lol. I sure am enjoying this. Thanks for sharing.

LOL....Thank guys! I think "artist" might be a bit of a stretch though. I think mainly I'm just stubborn. Still haven't mastered shrinking. But I'm working on it. Thanks for the compliments. Hopefully today I can get the last two patches welded in. Then the axle and suspension come off and it's off to blast.

If you figure out the shrinking thing give me a heads up, been trying that for years. I have a mechanical shrinker/stretcher  that works great when you can get it in the right place but no good in the middle of a big panel.

I tried it when I was younger. I could make things look like somebody beat the heck out them with a big hammer.  Have more patience now and a Jeep body full of plastic. So I guess I have an opportunity to try again

Oh yea this what did you do today. Well I decided I couldn’t have a green motor so I spent the day making it blue.

Finish polished the crank and cam this morning. Now it’s time to start getting some parts off the table and in the block

I've had limited success with the spot weld method. A spot, hammer surrounding area....quench. But then I usually screw it up removing the tack. LOL.

Maybe someday.....

Full on scope creep has occurred. I swore to myself I would not do this - a full nut and bolt build/resto. But here we are. The trailer completely blown apart and reduced to a pile of parts and a tub. All the bits are ready to head to the blaster. I don't know why I do this to myself!! LOLLOL
