Anyone have experience with running retread tires?
Won't be doing any heavy wheeling or play on rocks. Standard engine / driveline... Appreciate folk's thoughts.

No jeep experience with them. But big rigs runs them all the time. I remember my dad would buy them sometimes for the family car back in the '60s. I don't recall any problems.

I remember a family trip of under 100 miles in the late 60s where we peeled 3 tires on the family station wagon. Technology has probably improved since then, but ...
A lightly used small jeep probably wouldn't heat the tires up much though.

That's all I used (could afford) back in the day. The wheels were rusted, and tubes were a must. Driving around town and back and forth for school was pretty easy. I would also from time to time take it on trails and hills and then the lack of good tread would show.
I never had a flat but did have balance problems from getting a "bubble" balance. A spin balance fixed that.

I see they charge an extra $12.00 for a matched set of carcasses, I would go for that. BW

I have used Treadwright tires on our Wrangler for several years. 31x10.50x15 only problem was a rock through the side wall. Not the fault of the tire. I do not know all the sizes they build tires. Could be worth a look treadwright.com .

I had a set from them on my jeep a few years ago. 7.50-16 traction kings or similar. I was disappointed. THey started coming apart and wearing really fast. Then one started really thumping at around 5000 miles. I junked them and bought some regular tires.

I had a set from Hi-Tech retread (now TreadWright) on my daily driver XJ-Cherokee and we beat the crud out of them. Ran them at 10 PSI on the trails, no problems ever.

I only have experience with 31x10.50r15 retreads, and they were ok. The donor carcass was less than 2 years old, all 4 were from the same set, and they had no previous repairs.
Commercial truck tires are designed to be retreaded, consumer tires are not. In many cases commercial retreads are not legal on the steer axle either. If I had a farm truck I might run retreads but unless they are orbitread application using a mold machined to the proper mold shape of the donor carcass I don't run them . |

Interesting that both Tire Recappers and Treadwright both use the older BF Goodrich and Goodyear Wrangler tread patterns. Did they just purchase old molds?
