For several years, I pestered a friend of mine who had two MBs at a relative's house in the California Central Valley. They were picked up in the crate from the docks in Oakland and used around the farm for several years. They were parked in a barn for 40 years along with two trailers. I pestered him for 15 years and couldn't get one. Finally he rescued one, a '42. By the time they went back for the second, it was stolen.

Today, I purchased a 1947 CJ2A. It came with a California title from 1968 for a previous owner who lived in Santa Rosa. The last owner did not change it over to a Nevada title when he acquired it in 1994. He has since passed.

I did some internet searching for the individual listed on the CA pink slip and found the 85 year old gentleman living in Idaho. I had a nice long chat with him. He hated having to part with it. I'm working on confirming this, but I believe I purchased this vehicle:

He worked for the airport in Santa Rosa where Steelyard Blues was filmed. They paid to have his vehicle painted grey. I have no reason to doubt his story. It took me a while to locate the film. He did not recall the title. Everything he told me fit. He was not a fan of Jane.

He lost most of his papers to a fire. I'm hoping he can come up with some documentation. The actor who drove it in the scene just passed away in April 2017.

Everything but the "picked up at the docks in a crate" As no surplus would have been sold until after the war (at the very earliest late 1945) How would a 1942 be sitting on the docks in a crate in Oakland for 3 years of the war?

congratulations on the 2A hope you get a paper trail

You don't know how "efficiently" the Army works do you? It could have sat at Oakland Army Terminal for three years easily. LOL... I went through the terminal (it was called Oakland Army Base by that time) three times in 1966, 67, and 68 on my way back and forth to Vietnam and nothing on the base operated efficiently. Pretty typical of a lot of Army operations at the time.

Well, part of my friend's story may have not been all correct. One of his grand uncles is still alive, I think. Maybe he can clarify.

The previous owner sent me some people to call to verify the story. I will see if I can track them down.

As far as pictures, I tried. I get a error message about width. Don't know how to correct.

I will update as I learn more.

Interesting movie Jeep.  I just started watching "In Cold Blood" last night.  There's a scene an hour or so into the movie where the two bad guys are trying to hitch a ride and a guy in a CJ-2A almost stops, then goes on by.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

NOPE! Well, you guys and gals will just have to stand on your head.

Under this orange paint is the grey paint. Under that is Luzon red.

Original owner called me today and recalled that for the initial shoot, they used some type of water based paint that ran because of some fog in the air. They stripped it off and shot it with primer with the promise that they would pay to have a proper grey paint job. At the end of the movie, they tried to get out of the deal saying the movie was over budget. The owner, Philip, grabbed the guy and threw him up against the wall and explained how they were going to paint the Jeep. Unfortunately, the two owners of the shop have died. Trying to contact a family member but with the fires in Sonoma I don't expect an immediate answer.

TCM will be showing Steelyard Blues on 10/14. Set your DVR.

OMG, this one posted correctly. ????

I just noticed something. Philip mentioned that the movie recovered his red seats in the white material that is currently on the seats because they didn't look right in the film.

Compare this photo to my driver seat. I think it is a match. Even there is a bump where the seam is. There is a screw missing in the passenger but I think it lines up too.

Looks like back to up side down again.

Nice looking Jeep with a great story. Now if you can just get it flipped over & the tires back on the ground. Posting photos on here can be a challenge.

I watched the movie last night. No surprise that it wasn't nominated for an Academy Award. It was a bit tough to watch. The Jeep scene wasn't till nearly the end. Maybe four or five minutes screen of time. Hope I can prove that it is the same one.

Soaked my date plates in some vinegar to read it: 106327. Engine is J109205.

Knowing that it was titled last in Idaho, you've got a fairly easy road. Have him apply for either a lost title or a "conditional title" in Idaho. The lost title is easiest. If he can get it, all he has to do is sign off on it and send it to you. At that point the title is yours.

If you have to go the route of conditional title, it's much the same. The only difference is that the title has a temporary brand that automatically expires after three years if no one contests the title. I don't recall if you can sell the title out of state during this period, but I can find out if you'd like.

I live up north of Coeur d'Alene in the panhandle and I went through this with my jeep. The title brand expired just this last July, and I now have a clean, clear title on my jeep.

Les,
Thanks for the info, but I have the CA pink slip and just have to go to DMV with a form verifying the engine number which was used as the VIN. I wanted personalized plate 47 CJ2A but someone has it already. So, going to try and get CJ2A 47.

I had hoped to get it registered and running again by now. I had to rebuild the carb and then I found the tank was full off rust. I hope to have it fixed tomorrow. I wanted to make sure it runs before paying for registration and insurance.

As far as proving the story, I'm still working on that. I'm trying to enlist some help from the Santa Rosa, CA area but they have been a little busy with recovering from the fires.
