I picked up a 1948 CJ2A a couple weeks ago that is 98%? original. When I test drove it before purchase I did not have the opportunity to take it out on the road through the gears.
Now with it home it had a strange sound while driving in second/third gears under power.
It sounds like a compressed air leak like "Phist" but is not consistent with engine RPM or road speed.
I have replaced the exhaust manifold (warped and broken stud in the head)  and full exhaust system (someone's poor attempt at a replacement system) but this did not fix the problem.
There is no oil in the radiator or water in the crankcase.
It starts, idles and runs like a champ with no sign of a miss in the engine at any time.

I've been a mechanic for most of my 57years but this one has me buggered.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!!

Is it a noise you think we could here in a video or audio file?

Gear mesh?  These aren't the quietest Trannys out there.

If not consistent with RPMs or speed, could it be as easy as the Tranny or TC making contact with the underside of the tub?  Or wind blowing through a gap on the windshield?

To me it sure doesn't sound like a metallic noise or vibration.
You don't have to be moving all that fast either.
I have though about sticking my Go-Pro under the hood LOL
If you have ever heard an antique one cylinder engine fire it sounds very similar.
My first thought was back pressure building up in the old exhaust and reliving through the warped ex manifold but that wasn't it.

Yes pretty much like a hit and miss but not consistent with anything.
Neighbors asked if I was driving "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (w/o the bang part)
