Final inspecting parts and found that the t90a1 case has a crack in the rear of the case where the cluster gear shaft passes through the casting. It goes up to the big hole and down towards the bottom of the case. So, I am going to tear down another T90A that I have on hand and use it if it is good.
Also in the picture above you might have noticed that there are two different cluster gear shafts. The on on the left is a NOS shaft. The one on the right is a new Novak shaft. They are really different. I am thinking of using the NOS made in the USA stamped shaft.

Stev, you are about a year too late. A member needed to find a T90 case to replace his that was cracked. I seemed to have had one out in my garage that I got for free other than I had to do around a 120 mile round trip to get it. I knocked the rest of the gears out of it. I was sitting on my front porch having a cool one after when the guy walked up and I just pointed to it. He got a bit flustered and he had to dig his wallet out. I don't do this Jeep thing to make money. I had told him it was free...

Update
Talked to Herm and the Tera-Low transfer case with taper bearings is done! It should be here at the end of next week. Removed a compete bell housing, transmission, transfer case assembly on the cross member from a 1949. Got it cleaned and have started to remove the components. Hopefully the transmission case on this one will be in good shape (no cracks). The transmission and transfer case both had the magical brown pudding sludge 90 weight that flows like cake batter in them. |

Tera-Low in a large hole Dana 18 transfer case just arrived from Herm today. Lots of work to do now on this project.

OldTime, and others who have been through this-
Is the rear bearing on the T90c's main-shaft that is being mated to the Large hole Dana 18 with the Tera-Low gear different than the T90c's main-shaft bearing mated to a Small hole Dana 18 standard case? Dissembled a t90 from a small hole Dan18 transfer case this morning and it looks like the rear main-shaft bearing rides in the small hole casting of the transfer case. It seems like I need a larger rear bearing for the large hole case. Thanks, Stev |

The bearing itself is the same unless you go to a sealed bearing. Fafnir 307 K
BALL BEARING INTERCHANGE CHART FAFNIR.......MRC.........SKF............TIMKEN..........FM...........BCA When mating any T90 to any big hole transfer case you will need to use the very same adapter that Jeep used to mate T86AA to the big hole D18. Jeep also used a similar but sealed bearing on Gladiator trucks. Read the section on transmission influences |

Stan,
Herm did not send the bearing adapter with the Tera-Low. I ordered one on line Saturday - but failed (read - I did not know it was needed) to order the snap ring that goes inside the adapter. Hoping the smap ring is one I have on hand (it looks like the same snap ring as is used on the front bearing on the T90). Herm also mentions a "retainer plate to hold the gears together on the T90". Any idea on what else I am missing? Hope to do an assembly of the T90C next weekend. Stan - did you rebuild your T90a as a T90c? Thanks, Stev

Not sure what he means by "retainer plate." Been over a year since I was in there and my memory is short. Can't remember what I had for breakfast.
I bought my t90c, Tera Low transfer case and overdrive all from Herm and all pre-assembled. I've had it all apart a couple of times since then though. Leaked right out of the box. Tried to fix it. Still leaks. Broke some other things in the transfer case through abuse (driving high speed in low range). Edited by smfulle - 24 Sep. 2018 at 3:42pm |

Stan,
Thanks for posting the photo!
Interesting your adapter looks like a aluminum version of the crown T86AA adapter that is steel - which Oldtime suggested for the T90: https://www.cjjeepparts.com/928477.html There is also an adapter for a Dana 20 box - that is different: http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/716223--bronco-dana-20-brg-retainer/ Just have to wait to see what shows up and if it fits. Thanks, Stev |

This has been a great read.
There are few things in life that put a Big-smile on my face, and a few would be pretty women, snow skiing and the T-18 in my CJ-7. :) When I put the T-18 in the CJ-7 in 1984, I don't think Terra existed. After looking at the crawl numbers of the Terra 3.* gear-set to get 57:1 with the T-90 is excellent to match up with the L134. And I must agree with what one of the member's mentioned about reducing stress on the drivetrain with the lower gears, in the slow-crawl situations. We have lava around here and it is slow-going to the point where the Terra gear-set would make the jeep very-happy. |

Worked today on the T90C build. It has been challenging and still is not done. All the normal T90 challenges - dropping roller bearings, and sanding washers.
But the problem - is that the there is 1/8" of extra space between the bearing and the case. It is like the rear bearing spacer should be removed when using the T86 bearing retainers. (it is in the drawings for the T90 and the T86). I have taken this thing apart multiple times trying things to make sure the front and rear bearings are fully seated. Just can't close the gap to get the main shaft (rear) bearing retainer and the input shaft' bearing retainer - They both need to be flush with the outsides of the case - but they are not. 1/8" of extra space that can be shifted forward or back. Any thoughts on this issue when building a T90c? Question - If I had the synchro hub in backwards could that cause this issue? Thanks, Stev Edited by Stev - 01 Oct. 2018 at 2:59am |

Update on the T90c assembly. Yes, the synchro hub was in the assembly the wrong way - the assembly now fits in the case properly.
As for the rest of the T90c assembly, the cluster gear is quite a bit larger for the T90c than the T90a. When the cluster gear is placed in the bottom of the case, I removed the rear outer most washer in the back of the case, then installed the input shaft and then installed the washer in the back of the case. This allows for a little movement in the cluster gear when installing the input shaft - which is a very tight assembly fit. The rest of the assembly is like the T90a. You do not install the oil slinger in the T90c configuration.

One other note on the T90c assembly. I did put a piece of string in case (Novak T90 instructions suggestion) to lift the cluster gear when installing the cluster gear shaft. However, I could not get gear in the right position with its washers so in the end I inverted the case for the actual installation / alignment of the cluster gear shaft / washers. Perhaps the string works fine for the standard T90A configuration.

The CJ3A that I drove this past weekend at Cheap Jeep's ride has the following set-up:
Dauntless V6 T-14 D-18 with tera-low gears and Overdrive D-44 rear/D-27 front with 5:38's and lockers The OD really makes it nice splitting 2nd gear offroad when 1st isn't enough and 3rd is too much.....
