There was some discussion on this light in the past as far as being "red" or "Blue" What color is yours?
Mine on my old '48, ser. No. 203360 was red. Edited by GaryArf - 26 Nov. 2006 at 11:20am |

Can we assume then, that from Seans post
" Headlight High Beam Tell Tale Light - after s/n 32433" Tell tale lights were only fitted after S/No. 32433? |

Sean, #31662 has a tell tale with a red lens in it, and it very much appears to be original.

I know I've seen them on earlier jeeps than that?

13396 has a red tell tale light. However, it is mounted on the far left side of the dash; not next to the throttle as pictured above. Here's a picture: I just took the light out to install a new wire harness (from Walck's). It looks identical to the light pictured above. In the picture of my jeep, there is an object in the spot where the governor would be (I don't have a governor). It is an instrument/dash light switch installed by an earlier owner. I have removed that in favor of an original style switch mounted in the original spot (on the lip of the dash below the tell tale light). The other hole (which is empty and shows off the original harvest tan) is for the headlight switch. I had the switch out to "survey" some of my wiring problems at the time the picture was taken.
In case anyone is interested, I didn't have any problems attaching the light to the new harness and it works fine.

Chris, Your tell tail light is incorrect (your Jeep never had this update). That being said, you now have it intragrated into your Jeep. You haven't drilled any holes and have used the open holes avalaible. No shame in a factory update. Just to be sure you understand. This was a "Later" Jeep stock item (compared to your Ser. #) Your pics, are just too hot....Can you show more? |

Sean;
There is no hole in the dash (or remnants of a hole) near the throttle (the steering column obstructs the view of that portion of the dash in the picture I posted). Do you have a hole there on #16279?
If the light was moved, the only other hole in the dash (other than the hole for the governor) is the one below the headlight switch. That seems to be an unlikely placement for the light since it would be harder to see.
I'm open to suggestions/theories concerning original placement of the light. I just finished the wiring harness, so I'd like to have everything in the correct spot.
Anyone else want to venture a guess?
BTW Sean; Your website was very helpful as I worked my way through the wire harness installation. I took pictures and layed things out before hand, but you know how things can get "ball up" as you go through the installation. I found myself double checking things using your website. Thanks for taking the time to post the information!

Chris, if you read the 2nd post at the beginnning of this thread, Sean posted the serial number that the light started showing up in..#32433..yours was before this serial number, so it never had one from the factory..low

Right ...
As the saying goes; "when all else fails, read the directions".
There aren't too many holes in my dash, but I guess there are plenty of them in my head!
I guess I spent too much time looking at the pictures ... bright colors always distract me!

For the record, serial numbers 63707 and 107322 both have red tell tale lights. 217825 also has a red one.
