I have never seen any information on these two tone painted wheels that I have seen in old magizine adds and was wondering if anybody on here has ever seen any or was this just the advertising dept. painters'  imagination.  One add that I seen has yellow outer rims that matches the CJ2A and the centers are red.  I thought it was strange that they would advertise them if they didn't produce them.
  Just curiosity.

Hi Jim

Here's one discussion from a few years ago. There were some others with photos rather than ads that seemed to show two tone wheels. Some don't think so some do. My conclusion is they did at some time for marketing reasons thinking it would help spruce em up a bit. It's come up from time to time as old photos have been posted. Something that wasn't really resolved, waiting for more evidence or such.

Oops forgot to post the link.

  Thanks Allen,
I agree with you, even though they are paintings I don't think they would advertise something they didn't  produce.
Hope to see you again at the spring reunion.

Willys DID in fact advertise products that they did not produce....case in point being, that when the early advertising to the world announcing the arrival of the CJ2A to the civillian world, they used airbrushed pictures of the CJ2's, instead of sometimes the real depiction of the CJ2A.........

another case in point, wasWillys advertising the "Universal" Jeep as the great farm choice, some of the PTO pictures depicted the early, never released for production CJ2 PTO rear gearboxes...when the add was clearly for the CJ2..

Willys use many times over pictures, drawings, and airbrushed material that had absolutely no actual place or usage in the real world regarding correctness......

from an advertising standpoint, it was cheaper to use, or display, or airbrush over what was already on-hand, than it was to redraw to correctness.....

Do you think if they would have issued two tone wheels, they would have been pin-striped?

There have been some old B & W photos posted since that link that seem to show two tone wheels. One in particular was of an early 2A with the spare wheel mounted with no tire (rubber shortage?) that clearly showed two colors or shades anyway in B &W. Can't find that thread right now, perhaps someone else remembers it. Of the photos that seem to show two tone, they were all of early, mainly '45 2As. Not saying all '45s were but possibly a trial run?

I decided to do the two-tone wheels on my early '46 based on one of the advertisements.

With everything so right on the ad, how did they not get the license plate straight?

Notice "JEEP" and not "WILLYS" is stamped on the side of the hood.

it is widely known that this jeep is a very early CJ2, not a 2A......

if i am not mistaken, this jeep still exists, if not, there is still a "jeep" stamped jeep around...

I believe that CJ2 in the colored picture is CJ2-37 which was X61. If you look at other photographs of that Jeep, the wheels look to be one color. I think that top inset picture is of the same Jeep. I also think that picture was taken at the depot in New Hudson, MI. There are other b/w photos of that same Jeep in the same position. They all look to me to have one colored wheels.

In the photo at the depot, from the top of the wheel well and sticking about an inch in the well and over the top lip of the bed, what is that?

that is your illustrious air brushing going on......

although it appears body color, it is actually the bow retaining strap....

Bob,  I think that might be the top bow strap.  The artist probably thought it looked better if it matched the body color.Wink

Zooming into the photo helped me see that more clearly. I love all these old illustrations.

This thread reminds me of something I've been thinking about. I just got a load of old cameras from a guy. One is from 1906 or so, it's a 4x5 graflex model b, the other is a 1928 or so speed graphic. I'd love to retake some of these advertising photos that Willys produced back in the day. I think that would be great fun.

i think they should also have the back of the Jeep settled a little, since they are showing about 300 lbs of feed in it.
