Not that I would do it to my Jeep, but sitting under the bench is a spare Ford V4, German made. A spare one for my Saab.

Any body ever put one in a Willys, they are very compact, can be tuned to put out over 120hp and apart from the ugly engine note seem to be quite suitable.

Mines a 1500, they also came out as 1700, rev like mad and weigh very little.

Any thoughts on this, I can't imagine half a V8 would appeal to many

I think that would be way cool!
I last fall I put a fuel injected, 2300 Ranger motor in my 48 CJ2 and it works superb.
I was so impressed with the 4 cylinder in my Jeep that I put a 3.0 v6 in my 51 Ford F1 pickup.
These motors a light and, compared to the originals, way more efficient.
I would love to have a v4 to put in a Jeep.

Terry

Fuel costs have always been an issue down here, I think premium gas is around $2.30 NZD per litre, so a huge V8 does not make a great deal of sense to me.

All our work trucks are Diesel, all Toyotas.

The V4 is so compact it wouldn't involve a great deal of engineering to fit one.....hmmmmmm, must get myself another Jeep.

I was offered a Mahindra (Indian Jeep) the other day.

Food for thought......

Interesting idea, perhaps the limiting factor here in the US is availability of a donor engine, there were no Automotive applications common here, I have seen these engines used in industrial applications most common in early skid steer loaders. Do it Adrian!, be the first kid on the block

I've seen that in a Saab Sonnet. you may have problems with it not being far enough forward. the go devil has a step to the back of the block. Engines that are non stepped usuall hit the firewall. Thicker adaptor? Oilly

High rev is not what a Willys needs whats the torque rating on the engine like.

Quite a difference in the torque range 85ft lbs at 2500 rpm for the V4, 105 ft lbs at 2000 rpm for the L134.

Yes an adaptor would move it forward enough, perhaps a fan spacer.

If a rough donor comes up, I consider fitting it.

It certainly won't be going into the Column Shift one.

Don't use an adapter, use an underdrive of some kind.  You'd just move the engine forward and get some more low range.  As though a Jeep can't go slowly enough already... Tongue

Don't do it. If I was going to something silly like this I would drop in a Volvo B23 or of course a nice V6.
Sometimes I get distracted after doing the BS bit with a friend and will start out in 3rd gear. You can do that with a V6 and 5:38 gears.

Got another spare engine under the bench as well, another Ford and its either a Super Pursuit from a Aussie built Falcon or an early Mustang engine, 170ci.

It actually came out of a GPW I owned a few years ago.

I still have the adaptor for that one, it was a squeeze and had the radiator up against the grill as well as the firewall chopped.

I must get myself another Jeep so I can play with all these engines

No!, just got the one. (well two counting the one in the Saab).

The stock V4 is around 65hp for the 1500cc model, Saab works Rally cars were somewhere around 150hp, but that would have been bored to max oversize, 4 carbs etc etc.

I will have a play with the spare V4 at some stage, I'll probably make a slightly sportier engine out of it and fit it into the car.

The old Mighty Mites used an air cooled V4.  They were really cool.  I am sure with the appropriate amount of tuning the saab V4 would be very interesting.

Still thinking about it, I need to get the Saab mobile first and the will know if the spare engine is needed.

I have had the V4 in the car now running quite well, but then took it out to do a clutch job, so its not finished yet.

Meantime I brought a large portable sawmill this week so that will keep me busy giving it a birthday before it goes to the farm.

Short days here now, and will get shorter for another month.

Although its the long winter nights that gives me more time to play with old cars as my customers don't ask us to work all night, mid summer and a 16hr day is not uncommon
