I just picked up a parts washer on Craigslist.
Any recommendations for the solution I should use? I probably need to stick with a water based product. Thanks! Steve

X2 on the Stoddard solvent (Mineral Spirits).
Bolding mine. Why would you need to use water based products? IME, Unless they are well heated, they do not work very well. OTOH, Petroleum based products work well. I use Stoddard Solvent in my parts washer. |

Yeah, most water based solvents aren't worth much unless you want to soak the part in there for around a week.
Stoddard solvent/kerosene is a good solution. |

I use diesel. It's cheap and available at the gas station.
Only time I use water based is when I heat a canning pan full of simple green on an old hot plate. I stick whatever I'm washing in the pan. I have done this for transmission cases. Letting them sit overnight on low heat.

I first started using kerosene in my washer. Then I realized it left a slight film on the parts- nothing major.
In talking with a friend of mine, he suggested that I add some mineral spirits to my solution. This would help cut the film. Worked out great. |

Isn't that lighter fluid? Does it evaporate quickly? |

yes, same thing as in zippo lighter fluid (as I understand it). I don't know what the vapor pressure is, but it doesn't evaporate that fast. Besides, I keep the lid closed cuz I don't use it very often.

If you keep the lid closed, you don't get to enjoy the fragrance as much.
