I'm very familiar with winches and winching, my last was a Warn M8000 on a recently sold rig, regardless i'm also a fan of not reinventing the wheel. To that end i'm wondering what the CJ2A community likes for utility and recovery work?
Do I need an 8000k winch? 5-6000k good enough? 1.5x-2x the weight of the loaded rig is the rule still, right? Any good off-the-shelf mounting plates that look fairly stock? I like warn and ramsey...but open to other setups. Edited by bigdaddy13 - 10 May 2017 at 4:50pm |

If you have time and will - nothing beats a 8,000 to 10,000 pound Ramsey PTO Winch.

I used a Warn 13910 mount kit and a Warn M8000 winch on my 1949 CJ2A. It looks and works great!
I also used a smittybuilt license plate holder that clips on to the fairlead rollers for my front plate. I added a small steel cable so that I would not loose the plate. :)

Perfect, thanks! Just the info I was looking for. I like the low, around $100, price, too.

I have been using a 5000 lb Bad Lands winch from Harbor Freight for the past 6 years and it has done a great job. What ever winch you use you will probably have to make your own mount.

Another vote for Warn. You can't beat an M8000. Great value. The HS9500 on the crawler Jeep is 19 years old and has never failed. It's been through hell too.
I used a generic $50 plate which I modified to fit my set up. |

PTO vs. electric is the primary winch debate.
Everything else is secondary after that. I vote PTO if used frequently for rescue work and skidding. Rear mounted PTO is generally more functional than front mounted PTO I vote electric if used infrequently and mainly used for self extraction. Front electric mounting is generally more useful than rear electric mounting.

August 2017 we were on the trail in Southern Indiana after a heavy rain. The electric winches over heated after just a few pulls. The front mounted PTOs worked all afternoon and into the evening. We pulled over 3,500 feet of winch rope that day.
This was the second time in the past 8 years when it all fell apart and the old flat fenders with their PTO winches and skinny tires saved the day. Other than those two trips we could have gotten by with just the electrics on the Rubicons and TJs in our group.

In our group, everybody has winches. We usually don't need them except to pull somebody in another group out. If we need to help somebody, It's always the PTO hooked to them. Not much chance of overheating and my Koenig has more cable on it so I can do longer pulls.
The old Lakeview M 6000 on the Commando has done everything asked of it. The winches on both Jeeps were on them when I bought them. I did do the welding on my neighbors CJ7 winch mount. Mostly steel plate and angle iron. His design. It isn't pretty but it can fight. |

Even though I have an electric winch on my Jeep, I prefer a PTO. I have a Warn M8000 because back in 2013, a fellow board member told me about a sale on them via Amazon with free shipping....and Warn had a $100.00 rebate promotion too. It was just too good of a deal to pass up. I think if you are going to have an electric winch, Warn makes a good one.
In fact, Realdeal (Dave) is the person who told me about the great deal on Amazon.

I did the exact same thing Larry did. In fact, Larry helped install the Warn M8000 on my Jeep also. The Amazon deal was too good to pass up.

I like the way you got the tall 8274 mounted down as low as possible.

I went through the PTO versus electric debate in the late 60's. A point where I'm sure there were far more PTO options than electric. I decided then that the Belleview was not only the easiest to mount but also very well suited to a CJ. The Belleview 6000 that I purchased used in 1969 for my CJ 5 is still on it and has had nary a problem in the intervening 48 years. It was routinely used to skid firewood logs along with self extraction and pulling other rigs out.
In 1972 when I needed another winch for the 3B it was a no brainer and I purchased the now Warn badged and 8000 lb version of the same. Again, nary a problem. The only reason it isn't still on the B was a "free" 8274. Personally, I really don't see a need for a PTO winch on a light flat fender or CJ 5/6. A lot of extra weight and maintenance and a front mounting (where it's usually needed the most for self extraction) is very problematic with most updated steering arrangements. Obviously I'm also a diehard Warn fan. Great products. If you do any backcountry trails solo, which my wife and I do on a regular basis, you absolutely need a winch that works each and every time you need it for as long as you need it. A HF version may be cheap but like HF tools, a broken one is no better than nothing and you spent resources packing it in. A winch plate for old CJ's will likely need fabricated if you want a decent looking, functional mounting. Like masscj2, I like them low mounted. No use pulling the front end downward if you are already in mud up to the axles. And I try to keep the air flow to the radiator as unobstructed as possible. This is my latest version on my B:
