What was the point of the dual wheels? I've never seen that before!

terry give me your email ill send you dimensions, last semester i cast a ductile iron set of dual wheel adapters however i still have to machine them. As pointed out above liability stops me from making a bunch and selling them, however all my vehicles will have them and a few spares for my some day man cave.

Brian, the cool factor. Actually some were added with attachments like the jeep-a-trench/back hoe and the ditch digger attachment.

I kinda think these may have been from a go for digger or some other type of digger. Having the helper springs is an added bonus.

Were special rims/wheels required for this?

Anyone ever put them on the front also? Might make a good dune buggy.

Brian- It is my understanding the original point of the dual wheels was for military use during WWII. Radio&Reconnaissance GPW & MB were fitted with them for better flotation in the unknown marshy & soft terrain. Sometimes with them at all 4 corners. The duals were carried through for early CJ2a tow vehicles and of course the JEEP a Trench version of the 2A/3A/3B & CJ5s. I have a marshy spot on one of the trails on my property and decided to try and purchase a set of dual adaptors for my Gray Mule to see if that would make a difference when traveling that trail. I was quite impressed with the results once Harry S. & Joe D. hooked me up with a set up. Mine are marked FORD so I would guess they are WWII surplus from a GPW? I can now load my Mule with a mountain of firewood and sail through the mud puddle that used to stop me in my tracks. As Ralf said they also have the cool factor for sure when the Mule is parked for MSO(Maximum Show Off). |

I started this thread a few years ago. I found a set on ebay and bought them without the lugs. A friend who has since passed made me the lugs. I then had wheels painted and pin striped to match the red wheels on my 48 2A and even bought new NDT's. I can't remember what I paid for the hubs but I am pretty sure it wasn't $800.00.
Its about time I mounted them and posted pics. Looks like the guy on ebay joined this site to sell parts and that is fine by me. Ralph roc, I did buy that Supersonic head you alerted me to. I destroyed the one I bought from you years ago. It is being delivered to the Great Willys Picnic and then by "Forum Member Express" to me in WV. Ralph |
