Please see Questions and Answers for some topics that frequently appear on this board. As you can see, this board loads rather slowly. If you are posting something for sale, please remember to include your location since someone who might otherwise be interested might not be able to use a part or a vehicle that is too far away. Posting your location when you're selling something that needs to be hauled will save everyone's time (and reduce the number of posts on this already too-slow message board). Thanks.

: are my valves stuck?
: after removing my head i noticed that two of the valves are up and look like they are covered in carbon while the other six are even with the top of the engine. shoudnt one of the two valves next to each cylinder either be up or down?? i hope this is not some really basic how an engine works question that you all knew by the first grade. this is the first engine i have torn down other than the four cyl boat motors that i raced and the have no valves.
: thanks

The valves may not be stuck, you did not say if you tried turning the crank and seeing if the valves go back down in the block. If you have not tried turning the crank, I would suggest you do that before hammering on the valves. Depending on the stroke and position of the pistons, it is not abnormal for valves to be open at verying hights. Remember, you have four cylinders all drawing fuel and expelling exhaust at different times.
