How Does Oil Filter work?

I have the standard oil filter on my '47 CJ2a. The inlet line is on the top, the return line is
on the bottom. My filter pressurizes to the point that it leaks out the top, around the nut. (I am running 40Wt oil right now.
I took it off and opened it up. I found only a single hole in the pickup for the return line.
It was about 0.5 mm in diameter. Is it really true that all the oil gets forces through this
hole? I think I can make some more holes in the standoff. This should allow the oil to
flow into the return tube more freely, and hopefully the leak will stop.

The other part of me says, don't mess with it.

What do you guys think?

KM
