: I keep reading on this board about the L-134 block cracking at the distributor. How common is this and what causes it. Also is it common for freeze plugs to seep a little from time to time?
Allen:
I found the engine that come out of my Jeep had cracks in 2 places; by the distributor (a crack that had been welded shut, but opened up when the block was boiled), and also on top by the head (where the intake/exhaust manifold bolt to the side, near where there is a water jacket). I haven't seen any explanations for the cracks, but I always thought they were high stress areas in the original design... Also, I don't think the quality control on metallurgy was so great back in the 1940's.
