tappet adjustment

I've got an intermittent 'tap, tap, tap' coming from the engine. It has been suggested that one of the tappets / valves needs adjustment which is probably correct given what appears to incomplete combustion in #4 cylinder and a 'popping' heard in the exhaust.

Question: can one adjust the tappets without major disassembly of the engine? I envision being able to take the valve cover off, identify the problem, make an adjustment as needed, button up and go.
Is this realistic or is it far more involved than that?

Thanks!
