PL: It could well be in the front axle "joint". Looks like you will have to take it apart to see for sure. Do you know which type you have? The Jeep Manual describes 2 or 3 types of axles found on CJ2A's. I took my '46 apart to replace seals, and I had the "bendix" type (4 balls that move within slots formed within the inner and outer axle shafts, with a 5th ball in the middle). Over time the balls can wear the shaft slots so that they are no longer smooth, giving a "clunking" sensation when turning corners. I have read they can wear enough that the balls can actually pop out when turning tight corners (mine wasn't that bad). I found a set of spicer axles on e-bay from a later model; they have a u-joint connecting the inner and outer shaft, which can be replaced if worn. The changeout was easy. From what I have read, this was a common changeout made in 2As, so yours could already have this newer style axle. Good Luck,
