David, anything you don't take apart and look at WILL come back to haunt you! Brakes, differentials, engine, etc,etc. Depends on how far you want to go and how much you're willing to spend. I got mine for $800 with two engines and now over $5k and not road ready. It's my "hobby" and any hobby is expensive. As you've already learned by previous advise---get the books before you dive in.
