throw out bearing

When I seperated the transmission from the motor there was not a carrier spring installed. The transmission is a T-90a1 dated 1951. In my parts list book it shows one hooked up and I have a hole in the bearing carrier but no where to hook it at the other end. I am restoring a 1946 cj2a and I know this is not the correct year transmission for this but right now it is all I got. I am not a purist I just want to ride. My question is does all t-90 transmissions of any year require this spring? and how important is it?
Thanks in advance for any help
TF
